Moral Values and Their Importance

Live in such a way that if someone spoke badly of you, no one would ever believe it. The philosophical study of values has a name, actually it's called "axiology". It studies the metaphysical and epistemological status of values, broadly understood. But for our purposes, it's enough to say that values are things that people care about. Values are what matter to us. They are what motivate our behavior. They ground our judgments about what is good or bad, desirable or undesirable.

Moral values are the standards of good and evil, which govern an individual's behavior and choices. Individual's morals may derive from society and government, religion, or self. When moral values derive from society and government they, of necessity, may change as the laws and morals of the society change. Moral values also derive from within one's own self. A person may, under any given set of circumstances, decide to do what is forbidden. If this individual possesses moral values, going against them usually produces guilt.

Religion is another source of moral values. Most religions have built-in lists of do's and don'ts, a set of codes by which its adherents should live. Individuals who are followers of a particular religion will generally make a show of following that religion's behavioral code. Moral values are connected to fundamental human emotions and experiences that motivate us in distinctive ways. The overriding love and concern that parents feel for their children. The sympathy and empathy we experience when we perceive the suffering of others. The sense of duty and loyalty we feel to our family and close social groups, or broader communities to which we belong. The anger and indignation we feel toward those who threaten us or those we love. The feelings of unfairness and injustice we experience when we are treated poorly, and others treated better, for no good reason. The positive feelings associated with having the freedom to make our own choices and determine our own future. The admiration we feel toward those who exhibit courage and compassion. The guilt or shame we feel when we have violated a trust or otherwisefailed to live up to the values we endorse. It is impossible to talk of ethics without first considering some complementary and related terms. The three terms: ethics, morals, values are easily confused. Ethics describes a generally accepted set of moral principles.

Morals describes the goodness or badness or right or wrong of actions. Values describes individual or personal standards of what is valuable or important. Moral Values are the worthy ideals or principles that one follows to distinguish the right from the wrong. These ideals or virtues are considered worthy in building up the character of an individual. Moral Value refers to the good virtues such as honesty, integrity, truthfulness, compassion, helpfulness, love, respectfulness, hard-work, etc. The method of teaching moral values to students is universal. It is the most important duty of the teachers. If a child misbehaves or tells lies, people blame the parents and teachers. Thus examples of honesty and truthfulness in school and colleges are more effective than precepts or moral preaching.

Students are very sensitive. They fast copy their teachers, The teachers should always behave properly and set an example. The students look at them as their ideal. If a child observes his teachers to be truthful and honest, he shall also imbibe some of their virtues. In schools the textbooks ought to be based on symbolic stories. Mere platform lecture by teachers on the values of truth and honesty would bear no fruit. Moral education can be learnt at home, school and college. The scope for imparting moral teaching to the children is greater in home than in school or college because greater part of time is spent at home.When we love and respect others, when we work with honesty and when we do only what is right, we obviously transform ourselves into a better human being. Moral values help in shaping the character and personality of an individual. Moral values also earn you respect.

Moral values are essential for human relationships at all the levels of life. Be it our family, workplace or society, moral values are required everywhere in order to work smoothly and in a cooperative manner Moral values help us differentiate between good and bad, right and wrong. Hence, the decision power off an individual 'What are moral values? gets improved, naturally. Moral values help you in finding out the true purpose of your life. Once we start following the path of life through moral values, we start realizing the true purpose our life. We become unselfish, dedicated, loving and caring for others.

There is a big difference between knowing about moral values and actually trying to adopt the traits. Often standing up for your morals takes courage and strength. Moral values are set of principles guiding us to evaluate that what is right or wrong. It builds the personal character, governs behavior and choices of a person as well as helps is/ her to justify decisions, goals, and actions all through the life. Moral values are something that teaches us good virtues including honesty, truthfulness, kindness, integrity, helpfulness, compassion, respectfulness, love, respect for others, hard-work, co-operation, forgiveness, etc. Moral values should be taught to everyone especially the younger generations from childhood by the parents at home and teachers in the schools. Future of any student depends on the moral values imparted to him.
