Indian sports audiences are mostly confined to the cricket field. As is evident from the sports channels and coverage where out of 24 hours, 16 hours or sometimes even more that are given to religion of India causing lesser known sports to suffer. As a result the sportsperson performing good have to either cry out for audiences to come to stadiums (as done by Sunil Chhetri captain football national team) or stay in shadows till they perform exceptionally well. Few of such sports which need more attention are the following.
Even though there's a team named after India (Sahara force India) in the international circuit and had a couple of year on the calendar for racing at BIC, Still it's not seen the boom that was estimated. In the year 2013 the viewership for the Indian GP was really high but saw a plunge in next year as the crowds were unaware of what has happened previously because it wasn't being shown at a larger scale.U-19 sports events: Many Indian athletes did awesome in u-19 wrestling world cup but other than a small newspaper column were not given much attention. Similarly Hima Dass won gold for the first time but before getting there no one in India (including me) had no idea that such an event is being held, maybe a few knew but it was all very limiting knowledge and to encourage the athletes at younger levels attention is must for such events.
Field hockey: Indian men's and women's hockey team are performing really well these days and are giving world class performances and applause-able results. In recently concluded champions trophy India went on to finish 2nd place and lost to Australia in finals and that too in shootout. With such continuous good results there is need to increase the viewership to this sport.
Boxing: Indians produce great results in amateur boxing but again with very less viewership the athletes don't enjoy the same cheers on every jab landed, on punches that connect .Other than India's finest boxer in Vijender kumar who is doing great even in professional circuit the boxing talent in never less in India with the likes of Akhil, Manoj, L Devendro, etc. and female boxers like Marykom, Sarita devi, Sarjubala, etc. It’s time there thunderous cheers on every jolting strike.
Shooting: Even though India has produced sharp shooters it has failed to produce crowds willing to see shots fired (maybe because we are so much for non-violence). But with many World champions and Olympics medalists its time we see there precision. Be it seasoned shooters like Jitu, Tejasvini or Hina or youngsters like Manu, Anish or Mehuli.
Strength Sports: Gym culture is on a rise and so is bodybuilding but the sports like weightlifting and wrestling (original not the WWE) and kabbadi also should see the same boom. Indian weightlifters have done wonders, and the story of kabbadi is a legend it self winning all the world cups that come to memory. All I'm saying watch football, cricket, tennis these are good sports but all these other sports need attention. These sports can earn great laurels for India. So let's start watching such marvelous sports and also playing these brilliant sports.
