Statement of Purpose (architecture)

Architecture is a multi-dimensional field impacting functions of everyday life. We live in an era of constant growth and change aided by design. The application of architecture and design is a crucial component in building our society and the other fields of study. From our perception of right and wrong design, to new techniques and materials, the advancements studying architecture has brought to this world is immeasurable.

I am a native of Bengaluru, one of the more recently developed cities after the IT revolution, in India. Owing to this, I have had a multi-cultural conditioning, which is a facet of the city I’ve been in since childhood. The city, its vibrancy and its constant need to experiment and evolve has been the underlying theme of my own architectural style. My affinity for design and technology has been profound since childhood. I participated in several art competitions and was an avid technology enthusiast. I completed my schooling from Sri Aurobindo Memorial School in 2008. My performance in academics has been consistent from the beginning and I have worked hard as I do even now. I finished my schooling with accolades and noteworthy marks.

This boosted my confidence in taking a thorough look at what I enjoy learning about. There were many family members who were architects and involved in building design, hence my exposure to architecture has been since childhood, Architecture has complementary components of both structural elements and aesthetics, I believed our buildings are first visualized based on their structural feasibility. Thus I joined K.S. Polytechnic college for a Diploma in Civil Engineering (2010- 2013). During my course, I represented college as student ambassador helping upcoming students. Through the diploma, I gained the experience of leadership, team effort and diligence. Architecture on the larger realm is often an amalgamation of ideas and people’s styles.

During this time I completed several courses online on architecture and softwares. My determination to gain On site exposure and my strong academic know-how helped me secure a Summer internship at SR Constructions Pvt. Ltd, a leading real estate development and architecture firm based in Bangalore, as a Site Engineer (May 2014- August 2015)

Having completed a diploma, I was already part of the informal fraternity of architects. However my thirst for more knowledge and a larger vision guided me to my graduation in architecture from a well reputed college, School of Architecture & Planning, Bangalore. I carried my curiosity further. I equipped myself theoretically and practically by taking up an internships under several architects, in earth sciences and how we perceive sustainability. By the first two years of my course, I successfully completed an intensive training course with Auroville Earth Institute (Arches, Vaults, &Domes) under Ar. Lara Davis. I was also part of the ZONASA Team (2014) for the Reuben’s Trophy. Representing the college I won a guest prize at ARCHUMEN quiz competition by ETHOS in Bangalore 2016.

Through the arduous journey of architecture as a course, I have grown from a student to an aspiring architect who wants to see a change in the realm of architecture and its impact on the built context around us. I have been an active part of college during diploma hosting and executing events, and participating in several co-curricular activities. During my fourth year, I was drawn towards the topic of building amidst the ocean. In order to imply more than a public space that felt more justified, I chose to take up the topic of a prison. The complexity of the problem is not only extended to methodology but also planning and focused on the privacy of the space. I subsequently was nominated for 2017 NIASA’s best thesis awards.

My final year was a year-long internship under Architects Guru Prasanna and Ar. Deepa Suriyaprakash, given firm of name “ BETWEENLINES”, in Bangalore (June 2017- July 2018). The internship taught me how to understand client psychology, project management and gave me the confidence to take up freelance design projects of my own. They supported and honed my creativity and my penchant for digital architecture. I had experience designing with grasshopper for facades apart from, and was a critical part of the firm handing projects by myself on their behalf.

Apart from college and academic pursuits I have participated in several competitions winning top mentions in many international competitions. I finished top 25 in the RIO OLYMPICS FAN BOX competition held by ARCHASM,2016

I participated in the Schools without Classrooms competition held by ARCHASM, (2017), 59th Nasa held by Goa- College of Architecture. Enhancing my technical skills have proven very important in my career and helped me express my design better. Over the last 5 years, I have attended several workshops on the same to understand new software and their impact on output and process of design. I am also deeply interested in parametrics and architecture I have learnt Rhino 3D for Architecture, Grasshopper 3D for Architecture, Adobe for Architecture at Into Design, Research. Apart from this I’m highly active, with a constant zest for music, and event management around the city. I am a promoter of morschpit concerts since 2016. I also have a keen interest in treks, bike rides and rebuilding and remodeling old bikes. I own one such bike that I have re-built by hand.

Architecture has become a very important feature of my life and it is going to be my career. I would like to apply to your prestigious college as I find myself improving not only my skills and professional presence but also redefining my role in the architecture of today. I find that my technical skills, and design sense you’re your broadened perspectives and traditional ideals would make me an ideal and worthy professional in the reality of today’s architects. I know for certain, I will be an asset to your esteemed institution and bring laurels to my professors. I look forward to working with you, given the opportunity.
