A number of addiction models that provide a greater understanding on how individuals are influenced differently based on the type of drugs they use have been greatly researched. Different drugs have varying effect on the user and thus they tend to develop addiction differently. The key models of addiction that will be considered in this case will include the disease model and the Psychological model.
The disease model provides a greater focus on alcoholism as a medical disorder. An individual is unable to control their craving for drug and alcohol. Drug addiction and alcoholism is considered a disease based on the understanding that they fit the traditional model of a disease. The traditional elements of a disease that are considered in this include the fact that abnormal condition must be present in an individual that causes discomfort, distress to the individual. The medical community over the years have affirmed that addiction is a mental disorder, which must be effectively intervened, based on the medical treatment measures. Therefore classifying addiction as disease has created varying level of consideration under which critical measures have been put in place to improve the existing understanding under which addiction can be countered (Fraser, Moore & Keane, 2014).
This model is essential in creating a better focus on the existing addiction concerns among clients considering the varying level of addiction. It will provide the chemical addiction rehab center with a broad focus and understanding under which it would be possible to create an understanding on the best intervention. Classification of addiction as a disease allows it to be treated as such that allows significant focus on developing specific interventions that can help improve the individual situations.
The key advantage of this model of addiction is that it allows greater research to create a better understanding on the issues involved in addiction under which it is possible to develop crucial treatment measures, which can improve focus on countering drug addiction. The disadvantage of the disease model is that it justifies individuals’ negative behavior making it uncontrollable, which is a very detrimental move in controlling addiction risk factors (Palmer & McGeary, 2016).
Psychological model of addiction provides a great focus on the underlying consideration under which it is possible to understand the elements that influence an individual into substance use. This model focuses on the fact that addiction is psychologically motivated that is influenced by an individual behavioral consideration. An abnormal character that is exhibited by an individual causes dependence to chemicals. These issues create an enabling environment for addiction since there are no counter measures, which can be developed, effectively under which it is possible to have a greater focus and understanding under which it is possible to improve an individual wellbeing. An individual’s behavior is modelled along certain social focus and intercations under which it is possible to put into focus the underlying issues (Pickard, Ahmed, & Foddy, 2015).
This model will provide the rehab center with a greater focus and understanding under which it would be possible to develop an understanding on varying behavioral consideration of the clients. Understanding that addiction is strongly related with individual behavioral focus will provide a greater emphasis on the need to concentrate on individual behavioral traits in order to find a lasting solution to the specific addiction issues among the clients.
The advantage of the psychological dependency model of addiction is that it focuses on the existing risk factors that lead to addiction hence it provides a greater concentration on important elements which can be effectively countered and improve the wellbeing of the patients. The disadvantage in this case is that it does not provide focus on the extent at which individual behavior provides conducive environment for addiction that create a varying focus under which a specific intervention can be developed (Palmer & McGeary, 2016).
