Surveillance cameras in public places are very helpful and important in today’s life because they decrease crime rate and improve public safety. It is clear that surveillance cameras in public places have a big impact of declining the rate of crime and protect people’ life and property.

For example, according to Journalist’s Resource, “ A 2013 Chicago Tribune opinion piece quoted a city spokesman as saying that surveillance cameras helped solve 4,500 crimes over four years” (Kille and Maximino). If a criminal person knows that there are live surveillance cameras in a certain area, they may be less trying to commit a crime near the location for the fear of being caught by the police or seen by someone. In addition, Due to development of technology, robbers and criminal people can recognize by police in dark nights depending on surveillance cameras because their are some types of cameras that have ability to show criminal people’ faces or car’s plate numbers.

However, people can have a big role to decline crime rate and improve public safety by informing police about suspected people. For example, if somebody sees a doubtful person, they can record a video of this person or call police about him/her and give information to reduce crime rate and develop public safety. Also, having surveillance camera in public places is a good idea because it can see things that people can not see and catch. Surveillance cameras can be used like an evidence to prove that someone is a criminal. In same case, if there were no surveillance camera system, police can not catch criminal people and prove that they are doing a crime. Examples of public places that have surveillance cameras in are public parks, sport arenas, and malls. If a crime is happen in an area where a public surveillance camera has been set up, the chances of catching the criminal are much higher than an area where a public surveillance camera has not been set up.

For example, last week in Baghdad, a young woman was killed by unknown criminal people, so Iraqi police caught the criminal after 3 days depending on surveillance cameras that were in the place of the crime. Having surveillance cameras in houses make householders feel safer and more protective, and because of technological development, people can watch their house while they are outside their houses by connecting cameras to their mobile phones. Also, business people can overwatch and monitor their companies and people who are working for them by using surveillance cameras. Another problem that is happening daily in overcrowded places is sexual harassment. Surveillance cameras are useful to find those who do it to others. Declining crime rate and developing public safety are two main reasons why having public surveillance camera is essential.

I chose this topic to explain how having surveillance camera in public places is important and has a big role of improving public safety and decreasing crime rate. Nowadays, everyone should have a surveillance camera if they need to be safe because by having surveillance cameras, they are more safer, and also they feel more comfortable.
