To prepare myself to begin my Marian Scholars research project, I watched three TED Talks delivered to audiences by kids my age who took time and effort to research and present an idea of topic that they were passionate about. I first watched “A Promising Test for Pancreatic Cancer...From a Teenager,” in which a 15-year-old boy explains how he began to research and develop was to detect pancreatic cancer it it’s early stages after losing a family friend to the disease. He told his story to the audience and explained each step in how he was able to bring his idea to life while learning about antibodies in biology class. I found his experience to be very informative and enlightening, and he seemed very confident and prepared to deliver his presentation.
Next I watched “My Intention That Made Peace with the Lions,” in which a boy from Kenya explains how he placed moving lights around his property in order to keep Lions from preying on his family’s livestock. With the help of his friends, he installed his invention in many of the homes in his community, and he was able to receive a scholarship to one of the most prestigious schools in Kenya, where he hopes to begin learning and training to be a pilot. From this presentation, I learned that it is important to stay determined and optimistic when pursuing ideas.
The third and final TED Talk I watched was “An 11-Year-Old’s Magic Violin.” In her presentation, 11-year-old Sierra Huang reviews the structure of the vision and analyzed the way its technology and design combine together to produce entertainment in the hands of a musician. In addition to providing an explanation as to how the violin produces sound, she plays for impressive pieces on the instrument accompanied by a pianist. I found that her passion for her art seemed to myocardial her to want to learn more about its history and dynamics.
Watching these TED Talks has helped me realize that the best way to deliver a successful and informative presentation is to research a topic that I find interesting and want to learn more about. I must also properly prepare myself my practicing beforehand and staying confident when presenting. When a speaker employs confidence, it increases the effectiveness of the presentations and make it more enjoyable and sophisticated for the audience.
