Magazine’s content impacts and says a lot about one’s culture. People from another country can build an opinion about a certain country based on a magazine. For this assignment, I choose to analyze Women’s Health. This magazine primarily targets women as its audience. The women that read this magazine are searching for responses on fitness, health, and love. It is a monthly magazine that discusses topics on health and beauty and gives a lot of tips about exercising. This is a successful magazine because people can relate to it. It is not only about celebrities. Moreover, it is about everyday women that are not necessarily thin and perfect but are happy with their body.
From this magazine, we can conclude that American society is trying to promote healthy life more than just perfect models in order to prevent especially teenagers from eating disorders since that is one of the main problems within teenage girls. This kind of magazine plays a vital role in the prevention and recognition of different health fears facing women, whether they know it or not. The cover page is a picture of a celebrity Chrissy Teigen. She is wearing casual clothes with not a lot of makeup on her face. With this, Women’s Health is promoting healthy and casual sex appeal. Use of celebrity is a perfect way to build trust with the audience. By knowing that a celebrity is following what the magazine talks about the audience will trust their tips more. There is one interview with Serena Williams. This also shows a diversity between races. There is a balance between black and white women. However, the main reason why this magazine picked her is that even though she is not skinny, she is an athlete, therefore she has a healthy body.
This magazine is full of advertisements that fit into its main purpose. There are food ads that are promoting only healthy food. This is a perfect place to promote organic food, food that gives energy while exercising. What is interesting is that they make unhealthy things to look healthy. The example for this is the ad for beer, whit the picture of nature, fresh air and climbing which represents exercising again. Besides food ads, there are a lot of cosmetic ads for body care, and things that women use daily in their housework. They are even promoting sex in a healthy way and discuss its positive impact on personal health. According to this magazine being healthy means being beautiful and happy. This would be a Highbrow content magazine which has a specific target audience and it is a perfect place for placing ads.
While connecting this magazine with American culture I would think that American people’s main focus is on finding self-love through healthiness. I would think that they are trying to make an awareness that there is a beauty in imperfection. This is as we all know not an accurate presentation of American culture. It seems like they are trying to make a change of current lifestyle and what is considered pretty. They are trying to prove that for being healthy and happy with yourselves, one does not money, cosmetic surgeries or other procedures. It is enough to follow tips from this magazine and one is able to have a Hollywood- style glamour.
What can also be seen from Women’s Health is that American culture value family life as the most important thing. Throughout the whole magazine pictures with children, family dinners and pregnant women can be seen. Moreover, while promoting the family life there are a lot of ads with dogs and cats that are put in a situation when a family is spending their free time hanging out with their pets. After reading this magazine I would have a positive impression of the culture that is reflected in the magazine which is American culture, because it promotes the right lifestyle and right goals in lives of women, without racism and stereotypes about the perfect body.
