Philip Glass is a composer from the late twentieth century he was born on january 31, 1937 in Baltimore, Maryland and is still alive today at the age of eighty-one. Glass took classes at the Peabody Institute conservatory and then later studied at the University of Chicago when he was fourteen where he studied mathematics and philosophy and graduated in 1956 he then went to The Juilliard School to study composition.
Philip Glass lived in the twenty-first century. His style of music he wrote is classic music. One of his most famous composition is ¨glasswork¨. He wrote glasswork back in 1982. In September 2016 Barack Obama presented Glass with a National Medal of Arts. At the ceremony Glass was being rewarded for his contributions to music and composition. Barack Obama said he was “one of the most prolific, inventive, and influential artists of our time.
During the twentieth century which was the time period that he as making music in many things happened like The Great Depression, the Nazis took over germany, world war II, The Cold War, and the vietnam war. Also there were inventions like the colored tv, pac-man, rubik cube, and the internet. Also the berlin wall was built, Martin luther king jr. said his ¨I have a dream speech¨, Disney world opened up, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, and what might just be the most important thing is we sent a person to space.
The architecture during Philip´s career is similar to how it is today with the buildings they are either tall towers with windows surrounding them or there are smaller houses with simple straight edges and lines. If there are support pieces (for a building or bridge) than they are plain long pieces of metal. They do not have decorations like building used to have. Now a day's buildings are simpler made.
In the late twentieth art was was in the middle of changing to more modern look. The United States of America was the primary source of art therefore New York became the art capital of the world. There were many different types of art such as Abstract Expressionism, Color Field, Photo Realism, Minimalism , Pop Art, Environmentalism, Feminism, Performance Art, Postmodernism, and Conceptual art.
Expressionism was an American post WWII movement it also helped to put New York City at the center of the Western art world. Field painting is a style of abstract painting that emerged in New York it is similar to abstract expression and even came out around the sametime. Pop art is when material is removed from is known context or combined with other material that can be completely different to it.
Environmentalism is when people used environmental objects to produce temporary art. Feminist art was the efforts of feminists to make art that reflects women's lives and experiences, it also publicize their art to make it as recognized as men's artwork. Performance art was art that was intended to be presented to an audience in some form of scripted or unscripted manner.
Postmodernism is a term for the new interpretations of culture, literature, art, philosophy, architecture, economics. Conceptual art was the concept or idea involved in the artwork takes precedence over the traditional representation of normal art. Society is different now than it was back in the nineteen eighties. A few things that were different is there was a energy crisis all through the United States because of the oil embargo members of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries led to fuel shortages and sky-high prices throughout much of the decade.
