Imagine a world where you are unwanted, a world where you are constantly being chased and a world where all of your rights are not called rights—they are known as nonexistent privileges. This is the life of every Rohingya. It is the only life they have ever known of. Also known as the “world’s most persecuted minority”, the Rohingya consist of Muslims who once resided in Myanmar, according to CNN. However, as of the year 1982, this ethnic group was denied citizenship because of their religion and this generated their state of vagrancy. From thereon, the Rohingya have been fleeing to various surrounding countries in pursuit of better lives. These refugees necessitate assistance. Not only have they been terrorized and abused but they have also lost many loved ones and their homes. As stated by CNN, “With the torrential rains of the monsoon season approaching, along with the threat of cyclones and floods, the fate of tens of thousands of Rohingya refugees living in overcrowded camps in Bangladesh looks as precarious as their makeshift shelters”.
As it can be seen, the Rohingya populace is in desperate need of supplies and desiderata. They lack conventional abodes and Bangladesh was benign enough to accommodate them and their needs. Hence, students can assist the Rohingya Community by acquiring money across the school’s population. This can be accomplished by means of fundraising events such as soda float sales and raffles. The participants can be informed that all of the proceedings go towards a righteous cause. These contributions can be utilized to construct protective shelters for the Rohingya people. This will slightly alleviate their troubles. The plight of the Rohingya people has been ongoing for decades. However, this issue is known of to a very little extent. According to CNN, “‘it’s becoming a silent crisis which does not have the international attention that it deserves, given the scale of the needs of the people and the uncertain future they are facing,’ says Ezekiel Simperingham”.
The advancing matter of the Rohingya Community has minimal global recognition. Hence, the student body can aid in raising awareness of this predicament in schools and neighborhoods through social media and the distribution of flyers to the general public. This will apprise the struggle of our brothers and sisters. These steps towards cognizance will stimulate supplemental succor for the Rohingya people. These Rohingya Community is not only in need of homes but it is also in need of food, water and clothing. As claimed by Aljazeera (2017), “Bangladesh needs ‘massive international assistance’ to feed and shelter the 436,000 Rohingya who have fled Myanmar in recent weeks… ‘I was struck by the incredible magnitude of their needs.
They need everything - they need food, they need clean water, they need shelter, they need proper healthcare,’ UN High Commissioner told reporters”. The Rohingya people are in dire need of food and water. Thus, high school students can organize food and clothing drives throughout schools and communities in support of a worthy cause. This will not only alleviate the situation but it will also fill donors with a sense of service and solicitude. In conclusion, the Rohingya people are not only in search of a safe haven but they are also in search of betterment. They have hitherto encountered hardships but the end of this is here. As Samaritans, we must endeavor to support the Rohingya Community. They need our help and looking away is not an option.
