Change and continuity over time is a classic and certain dichotomy within history that is analysed in the essay. Such a dichotomy is useful for evaluating developments in societies or transitions from one period to the next. When looking at how local, national or global approaches can be used to explore this dichotomy, there is the approach of utilizing micro and macro history. Both approaches to history are arguably useful in discerning change and continuity in history through either looking at specific events that greatly propel a society into a new period of history as with the invention of the printing press, or with long-term trends in global history such as the seemingly inevitable feudal society that evolves into the early modern period. Regardless, the usefulness of local and national history in understanding change and continuity in history is rather clear.

Nations are, by nature, built on common culture: a continuous culture that people relate to and therefore cause them to congregate. These nations are then built upon through technological changes and changes in governing that work to develop said nation. On the other hand, local history is not merely national history on a smaller scale but a study of past events in a given geographical. Local history takes in a broad range of historical inquiry that can cut across other disciplines and sources including oral traditions, social and cultural practices. The thoughts and opinions of the common man away from the perceived entirety of the nation changes and therefore changes the nation and these opinions can easily persist and form an identity even within a small geographical. As described earlier, global history is useful for exploring change and continuity in history as it allows one to see common patterns and trends amongst all cultures. Global history is often concerned to explore social dynamics that have led to large-scale changes in human society, such as industrialization, and to analyse how large-scale changes like that have affected various parts of the world.

For example war, by nature, is consistent throughout history. Whether on a local, national or global scale. War, by definition, is simply armed conflict between societies, governments or even militias: characterized by extreme violence and typically gross mortality. Though historical factors tend to stabilize the character of war, it should be noted that war is a human experience dominated by violence for the sake of political objectives. With this in mind, we can understand that the essence of war is “an act of violence intended to compel our opponent to fulfill our will”. When looking at war under the lens of continuity and change, there is an interesting view that if one focuses on continuity in change, one is near certain to undervalue the change in continuity. It should be noted that the nature of war and its character are two different things. The nature of war is the political motivations that drive nations to bear arms against each other, whereas the character of war is the way in which arms are born. It is the latter that helps us explore and understand change and continuity in war.

The relationships between humans and technology can also be analysed within the theme of continuity and change over time. In the earliest human societies, technology was limited to simple tools made from stone, bone, and wood. These tools were used for hunting, gathering, and building shelter. Over time, however, humans developed new technologies, such as the wheel and the plow, which allowed them to farm and build more complex societies. With the invention of writing and the printing press, information became more accessible, leading to advancements in science, art, and literature. The Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries brought about significant changes in the relationship between humans and technology. With the development of steam power and the mechanization of factories, productivity and efficiency increased dramatically. The mass production of goods and the growth of cities led to significant social and economic changes, including the rise of the middle class and the decline of rural societies. In the 20th century, technology continued to evolve at an unprecedented pace. The invention of the telephone, radio, and television transformed communication and entertainment. The development of computers and the internet revolutionized the way we work, learn, and interact with each other. In recent years, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics have led to even more profound changes in the way we live and work. Despite these advancements, however, there are also continuity in the relationship between humans and technology. Humans continue to seek out ways to make their lives easier and more efficient, and technology continues to provide new solutions to these needs. At the same time, humans also struggle with the social and ethical implications of new technologies, such as privacy concerns and job displacement.

In conclusion, the dichotomy of continuity and change is a fundamental aspect of human history. While there have been significant changes in technology, society, and culture over time, there are also enduring patterns and traditions that have persisted throughout history. Understanding the complex relationship between continuity and change is essential for understanding the past and navigating the present.
