Within the last decade there has been an exponential increase in the number of individuals switching to organic foods in return of a so-called healthier diet. Large-scale industrial production has caused conventional foods to result as harmful and in fact detrimental to the human body. Shape, ingredients, and chemicals associated with foods are beginning to be questioned more and more as time goes on due to this damaging effect. Although many questions persist when it comes to organic foods being this ideal healthy food those claim it to be, it leads to the modern debate of whether or not organic food is the solution or another trend created by society.
Individuals choose to consume organic foods for various reasons aside from the ideology those in society place on it including health and nutritional concern, environmental concern, superior taste, food safety or lack of confidence in the conventional food industry and concern over animal welfare. In Denmark a study was constructed dividing consumers into two categories, being convenience behaviours and reflexive practices (Hjelmar 2019). Individuals who purchase organic products based on convenience require the products to be available at their local supermarket and for the prices of organic foods must be similar to the conventional foods. Reflexive shopping on the other hand is often started due to certain events, such as having children, etc (Hjelmar 2019). Studies show that the primary organic shoppers are mature females with children in particular. The reason as to why this is logical is likely because families are often introduced to organic products after having a baby part of the “healthier diet” influences.
A large overall desire to maintain youth has also joint in with the growing concerns of health and nutrition. In the last years a growing concern regarding health and fitness has occurred. Consumer demand for the “healthy food” they consider, being mainly organic foods has been increasing and leads to the awareness in both diet and exercise. Another growing ideology in society has been the emergence of anti-aging foods and the result of looking young once ingested. Avocados, which are rich in folic acid and vitamin B, as well as Fish, which overcome inflammation and walnuts, which are good for managing cholesterol, are few of the foods gaining popularity in the industry. These are just some of the foods that are known as the “top ten anti-aging foods.”
In conclusion, I feel that conventional and organic products are becoming increasingly popular and research continues to show their benefits along with possible consequences. While, there has been proven pros and cons to this organic food epidemic, currently I feel that there is still more research that needs to be done for society to take it on. More specified research would in turn provide people with the peace of mind and more reasons to go organic and natural.
