A short look back will tell you that Germany has been a territory that has not been united for a long period of times, in fact, for the past two millennia, it has rarely been united. This can even be indicated by the mere facts that the place today referred to as Germany had been subdivided into hundreds of units since time immemorial. This tells the larger part of the story. In fact while other countries like England were developing into unified countries, Germany was on the contrary involved in series of fights within the local rulers (Blackbourn, 1998)
Germany like any other country has its history though. Every country has its own historical experiences and these are the shapers and directors of a country’s political landscape and therefore it would help us a ton to recap just a small of the common German history in the buildup of the political arena. Germany’s historical involvements differs substantially from those of other countries in Europe. Take a simple example, you will reckon with me that Germany is the country that has had the lowest and dark moments in the history of mankind. When one is told about the history of Germany what comes to the mind might not be the celebrities like Michael Schumacher or the genius in Albert Einstein but rather in most a cases, what comes to the mind is the dark days of Hitler. What one would think of is the Nazis.
Germany has also had highest points also, in fact it is debatable though that the highest moments in the history of mankind might have been witnessed in Germany and not in any other country in the world. (Grosser, 1971)
This is all history and no body or no country doesn’t have his. In this article we shall not focus on the general history of Germany but rather the political development of the country.Germany political development can be traced from the time the Franks under their Carolingian leaders, back in the 9th century, came up together to put up the huge empire in the western and Central Europe. This had been precedent by the Romans trying to incorporate and integrate the lands in the Rhine and Danube though they had abandoned this agenda in the long run.
These were just the preliminaries since the Merovingian kings of the Franks had come along after the collapse of the Gothic empire in Italy and had been more successful per say. The Frankish leadership was more immense and pronounced in the 9th and 10th century in fact only the British Isle, the Spanish peninsula and the Scandinavian remained out of the Frankish control but not confuse that with influence which was inevitable to most of the empires around those times (Ramm, 1967)
The political development was basically divide into many units. More so based on the religions, where some were the Protestants and the other group consisted of the Catholics. In the 9th century the rise of Charles (as king) and his sons was a historical breakthrough in the political history and cannot go unspoken. He administered the royal palaces though most of the duties he had delegated to his agents.
The king had people who organized his journeys and also had a group of people who formed the counsellor council that would be involved in the advising matters to the Carolingian. The king had a court through which he governed from. He made his will known to the people through the court in person, through representatives or through writing.
From this system the political system developed into a more integrated system in the 12thcentury. The Roman Empire had one of the strongest influence to the system. In fact it started declining in terms of its’ power after the 16th century and not until then. The pope used to be a powerful person and the politics then rotated and were moderated by the church (Blackbourn, 1998)
Having indicated that, we note that the biggest of the Germany story inpolitics can be attributed to the periods between the 15th and the 16thcentury. Many of the more strongly felt changes in those periods around the world were more prominent in the German speaking lands.
Between the year 1493 up to and reaching the 1700, the country was fragmented with notions of reformation that never came to pass. It is referredto as the Maximiliano reign which was dominated by three important issues. One being the fundamentalism and importance of the holy roman church. The other political issue revolved around reformation of the entire states’ governing body which was a growing concern in those periods. Humanists were indeed in support of the Maximiliano reign (Grosser, 1971)
It is essential to note that this reign had come after the Hohenstaufen dynasty which after their extinction the imperial authority has been disintegrated and disorganized to the extent that they have been absorbed in the struggles both of foreign and internal powers. Powers had moved to government of the states (territorial) and cities
In conclusion, the history of Germany political system can therefore be traced on these roots. The country have had a far reaching political journey unlike most of the countries which have had a more smooth transitions of power.
