The use of tobacco is a global epidemic among young people and adults that poses heavy consequences to our physical and mental health and I want to create aware of it.

As our parents once told us, “Cigarettes/Tobacco are bad for your health”, however, they don’t really tell us why or how they are bad, at least not a “in-depth” manner. I will be talking about the consequences of the use of tobacco and its history. Firstly, I will be talking about tobacco’s history.

The Tobacco plant originally came from North and South America, as crazy as it sounds, it’s associated with condiments we put in our foods like the potato and pepper. It goes back as far as 1 B. C. , when tobacco made an appearance, it was mainly used by American Indians, and was used in different practices such as religious and medicinal practices. Back then Tobacco was believed to be a cure for everything, two of tobacco’s main uses was to heal wounds and be used as a pain killer.

WWI was around the time the use of cigarettes became widely popular, and from that point on it has created such an impact, that even though tobacco industries know the harm they cause, they still sell them. As a result, the main cause of cancer is due to tobacco.

After specialists ran different analysis, they came up with a percentage of 33% of people living in the United States have cancer due to tobacco. This is in comparison with other causes of cancer, and it’s the number one cause for it. Most cancers are influenced by our environment and lifestyle, being surrounded by tobacco smoke is just as dangerous as smoking it ourselves, and it’s called second-hand smoke.

Second-hand smoke is the smoke being inhaled from other people smoking, this can also lead up to getting cancer. To mention a few of the most common cancer due to tobacco are: Cancer to the lung, bladder, liver, throat and stomach. Transition: In addition, Tobacco also has a big influence in teen and young adult’s emotions.

Researchers from the university of Otago found out that men and women aged 18, 21, and 25 years Smokers had more than twice the rate of depression. The nicotine that cigarettes contain damages pathways in the brain, this is what leads up to having mood swings. Which can affect how we go about our daily routine. People who don’t smoke, but spend time with people that do, are also in high risk of health issues and depression. Just like stated before with the secondhand smoke, if it’s around you it’s going to affect you. Lastly, to finalize this presentation.

Tobacco might be profitable for some people, however, the dangers such as cancer and depression are a big issue, and we may ignore them, but the damage would still be there. I hope that from this presentation at least one of you became more aware of the harm tobacco causes, and if you ever decide to light up another cigarette, you keep in mind that a moment of relaxation could get followed by a life of pain.
