The Hungarian Uprising

Greece has a long history of building a peaceful state for hundred years since its formed, from Greek revolution, Battles of Greece at 1940 until Greek civil war. These conflicts have experienced us to overcome similar issues until now like Hungary nowadays. This kind of event that our family, specifically Hungary, suffers is also a kind of revolution.

The conflicts of Hungary arose in October 1956, has led into an uprising by its civilians. Despite the uprising by the Hungarians has succeeded in overthrowing the government, they are still threatened with the deployment of Soviet Union troops because they have the right to intervene other nations within the sphere of communist influence.

Greece believes that the current “De Facto” government has the real authority since it has truly birth the real democracy for its people to rein their own land. This resulted an estimated 2,500 Hungarians died and 200,000 more fled as refugees. Greece strongly opposes any act of violating humanity and recommends addressing the potential refugees’ issues as thousands of Hungarians that lost their homes because fleeing violence or a crackdown on domestic dissent.

Greece knows that Hungarian’s people who became a victim are an important reason why we have to withdraw troops immediately. Furthermore, empty statements had to avoid since needed practical implementation of concrete policy actions to address the issue. Greece, who joined NATO in 1952, also had an opportunity to join the discussion about these issues. NATO analysts explained that the Soviet leaders sought to continue endless efforts to promote the power of the Communist world and weaken its opponents.

In February 1956, the results obtained from NATO experts who gathered at the Twentieth Congress of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union were the dissolution of NATO and the European Union, the withdrawal of NATO troops from bases in Europe, and the prevention of West Germany’s participation in the Western alliance still Soviet’s aims. In October 27, the North Atlantic Council took place in Hungary to intensive discussion. From many countries had joined, The Greek and the Italian Permanent Representatives suggested issuing a communiqué, so that the world would know that NATO was considering the Hungarian question. A communiqué would immediately be used by the Soviets for justifying their intervention in Hungary. The Council accepted this argument. Before Hungarian Revolution happened in 1956, besides, Greece has been contributing to United Nations High Commissioner of Refugees (UNHCR) on giving hands for resettling refugees which led to Nobel Peace Prize for its’ efforts two years ago.

In conclusion, the UNHCR needs to take further actions for helping 200.000 refugees caused by the conflict. We suggest conducting an open discussion for the Government of Hungary and its citizens, especially community leaders or public figures which represents the nation to create the best solution for their country.

Moreover, the destruction in Hungary caused by these conflicts influenced their economics and diplomatic aspects. Thus, we recommend an ad-hoc UN body creation that called Hungarian Emergency Council (HEC). The Hungarian Emergency Council will be divided into two chambers, the first one is the Diplomatic Chamber whom we designed to rebuild the Diplomatic Affairs for both conflicting countries. The Diplomatic Affairs will conduct a monthly regular meeting. These meetings can be the place to share thoughts, ideas and even create bilateral cooperation.

And the second, we have the Economics Chamber that will be focusing on the stabilization of the Hungary’s Economics, by lending them a hand and a support through concrete economical actions such as the One Week Building Programme or can be shortened as (Owe Build). The programme will help by reconstructing the wrecked city, Budapest, which on the other side is the capital city of Hungary. The conflict also led into humanitarian crisis, disastrous event and the violation of United Nations’ Charter. As we know, some uprisings always had people to become victim, not just deaths but also the refugees’ issues. People that become refugee in other countries tend to felt suicide and discriminated with different societies. Thus, after having counseling in UNHCR, there would be socialization in new societies to avoid discrimination.
