Tonight’s debate was in Milwaukee in Wisconsin, but the candidates are already considering issues for South Carolina. In both Clinton’s and Sanders’ opening statements, they assured that they will be considering issues that concern African-American voters. Clinton mentioned discrimination against African Americans, while Sanders criticized the prison system and marijuana arrests. Sanders said that he didn’t disagree with any of Clinton’s policies, and he promised that at the end of his first term as president, there will not be more people in jail than any other country. As for other policies, Sanders is more idealistic, while Clinton is more realistic. For example, Sanders reiterated his proposal of single payer healthcare and tuition free public colleges and universities. With his college plan, he plans to use Wall Street speculation tax as a way of funding tuition free college. On the other hand, Clinton has a debt free plan for college; students would not be in consumed in debt by the time they leave college. Clinton was also asked about Madeleine Albright’s controversial comment. Clinton said that she wants women and men to make the best decisions they can make. In other words, she wants less gender segregation, especially in politics. Clinton and Sanders also talked about issues important to women, such as paid family leave and equal pay, which were issues they mostly agree on. I think that both candidates would be good candidates; I cannot decide on who I would vote for. Both candidates have good ideology, but it will be a hard fight against the Republicans. It will definitely be harder for Sanders to pass his policies, but at least he has dreams. If it’s hard for him to pass his policies, he can probably make them more reasonable and adapt to society’s demands.
