Art has always been important in many societies throughout history. The meaning of art has changed greatly over time. And the meaning of art is something that is often debated and does not have one set definition. Art is something that is highly subjective and everyone has their own interpretation of what art means to them. There are some people that argue that anything can be considered art, while others argue that it has to follow a certain set of rules for it to constitute as art.
In today's culture and society, it seems like almost anything can be qualified to be an work of art. This is true because new artists continue to push the boundaries of contemporary art. This was especially made evident to me when I visited The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). This museum displays lots of modern artwork. There are many artworks I have seen there that I do not understand why it is considered art. For an artwork to qualify as art for me, it has be a creative expression of something unique and it also has to take skill to create. It should not be something that can be easily replicated by anyone.
An example of this is Bicycle Wheel created by Marcel Duchamp in 1951. Duchamp combined two common objects to make this artwork. He built this by mounting a bicycle wheel on top of a kitchen stool. This is something that I don’t consider to be a work of art because there is nothing special about it. It is just an ordinary bicycle wheel and an ordinary kitchen stool. I do not see any creativity in it at all nor does this artwork look aesthetic. To me, it just seems like Duchamp picked two random objects, put them together and called it a work of art. It also does not qualify as art for me because it looks like it does not require any skill to create it. Anyone can put those two objects together and reproduce it easily.
On the other hand, I could see how the Bicycle Wheel might qualify as art to some different people. If it is such a popular piece that belongs in a museum and is being displayed in MoMa, it must be considered to be art by a large group of people. These are the type of people that probably argue that anything and everything can be qualified as art. Bicycle Wheel can be considered to be art because it is unique and the artist is doing something totally different from what you will normally expect in art. The two objects put together can have a deeper meaning and have a story behind it. And because it is so unique, people at the museum are often amazed and interested in this piece. It forces people to really think about it and have their own interpretation on this piece.
In conclusion, art is something beautiful that will always be an important aspect in all of our lives. Art is very subjective and is a hard concept to explain. What art means to you may not mean the same to another person. I might not ever fully understand what qualifies as art, but I can always appreciate all kinds of art when I see it.
