How are the effects of partying, how to struggle with study while partying, what is the good balance, at what point does it become a threat for studies, is it a good or a bad thing to party during your study, … all those questions have been raised by many people, and there have been as many arguments as there have been opinions.

At first sight, many articles and studies highlight the damaging effects on study when students party too much and go too far while they are going out. Some articles draw not only the skipping class student when he went out the day before, or the student who is always away in class and cannot focus anymore, but also, the significant damages, that partying and what comes with it, can have on students’ mind, health, and especially brain. When students party, they are indeed doing sometimes drugs, and drinking too much alcohol, they skip sleeping, and actually, many specialists are warning people on the consequences that are beyond remedy. Drugs can dramatically affect memory, and as a matter of fact can cause students to fail or at least lag behind. Alcohol, for its part, makes the recovery longer, and students might be tempted to skip more and more class after partying, and furthermore, alcohol is also highly addictive, and can also affect health. All those “go too far” tendencies seem to be serious and can as well create legal issue and lead students to a path of no coming back.

At that point, even more worrying, it can ruin the whole future professional life of a student, if he ends up with a criminal record, for using illegal substance, for drinking while underaged, as this article shows: “A party of mine was busted last year. I ended up with 10 hours of community service and a fine to pay, ” Davitt said” … and so, stop a career when it is necessary to be absolutely legally clean. In fact, according to those kinds of articles, partying and so skipping class several time, being away, sleeping in class, getting health issue are the long path to lag behind and as well in some cases to get suspended from the university. Thus, at that point, there seem to be no issue but to avoid partying in order not to get in trouble for study. According to different studies, there also more and more students who are willing to party, especially at the beginning of their study. However, this tendency is to decrease when students finished their first several years, or at least, they party less, less often, and more reasonably. “

Last year, 18 percent of students surveyed reported spending at least 16 hours a week socializing, and more than 41 percent said they did not party at all. ”Partying reasonably is precisely what might be the secret to succeed. A study on Erasmus students have been done to explain that partying can be done reasonably and have fun as well: “A key factor of the program is that it doesn’t expect students to stop drinking entirely. Instead the aim is to ensure that students are aware of the health and social risks of excessive drinking and to implement strategies to manage levels of alcohol consumption. One of these is as simple as ensuring that there is free water at parties. Another is to invite students to participate in a light-up reaction wall to demonstrate how reactions are slowed down after drinking alcohol. ”

Some articles are, on the contrary, willing to highlight how it could be beneficial to party and go out during the study, trouble is that students have to find a way to do it reasonably, and in that case, it could be even the best way to achieve success. In fact, having fun, getting out, is a way to evacuate stress and pression from class, and so get more focused when it comes to studying. There need to be a time for having fun, and a time for studying, in order to get and stay efficient, and well in one’s mind as well. Therefore, some articles are also willing to give a so-called notice to help people find a good balance, and how to be responsible while partying in order to succeed and be well, based on different study-cases. What do we come up with?

In fact, since we considered the “go too far” of different students, we can only condemn this behaviour and warn on the damages on study in particular. However, what is really to consider is that there is a real way which is working for many students. Being responsible and reasonable. And maybe the real question that matters is not if it is good or bad, but how it is good and how it is bad. Finally, what we can conclude thanks to these articles is that our problematic can be answered by the fact that some people can easily find a way to party reasonably and be responsible, while some others are just focused on being at party and “go too far”. Some might feel their limits, some others don’t and eventually some know how, how often and when partying, some seem to struggle with the need to push their limits too far.
