Nicholas D. Kristof is wrong in his quote about gender equality. It talks about the “moral challenges” in every century, which means the main problem each century is facing. Also, it is saying gender equality is the main issue we are facing in current day society as compared to slavery back then. All the moral challenges stated are conceived to be morally wrong. The reason I disagree with this is that gender inequality was present in almost all the centuries humans been living in. It has always been a main problem and there hasn’t been much fixes to it. For example, in previous centuries, there were many male emperors ruling. There were rarely any females, and as compared to current day society, there aren’t many females serving in leadership roles for companies. For a better example of leadership roles, we can look at presidency for the United States. Every single United States president throughout the years has been males. Now, this has been throughout the centuries and there are many reasons for this. People may think that women don’t have what it takes, but if you take a look at education women exceeds men in standardized tests, study habits, and more. Also, if women were involved in leadership roles, they would contribute more than men.
In today’s society, I believe that gender equality has been better more than ever as compared to other time periods in history. There have been new groups involved, as well as new laws. Recently, I was curious to ask my mother about her family and she said that all her sisters stopped education after middle school. However, her brothers continued education all the way past high school. This just shows that gender inequality is present in other countries as well. Now, there are more women in colleges than men.
Some people might say that the only moral challenge this century is gender equality. This is because slavery and other moral challenges were resolved. When I say resolved, it really means reduced greatly. Other moral challenges like prostitution are linked to gender inequality and this makes it so it is a huge problem. You see that women are being exploited in many ways as shown in “Half the Sky”. This shows that it is the main issue we are facing, but it doesn’t mean it can’t be stopped. As mentioned by Kristoff, this is morally wrong, but in the end, it is still a problem we have to fix. Problems like slavery are still in act today, but it is in a different form that is linked to gender inequality. This shows that gender inequality has always been a problem. This is the beginning of the gender inequality, and it takes more than one small step to stop it. I’m not saying that it will always be there, but history speaks for itself.
