The 'Social Service in Schools' essay presents arguments on the idea of mandating social service as a part of the curriculum, with some advocating for the benefits of instilling a sense of social responsibility in students.
In today’s modern era, where people are fast moving behind power, money and nobody cares about who is next door they just want to be at the top position by hook or crook. For this I will quote an example of Mr Vijay Mallya the most flamboyant and high profile Indian businessman who successfully headed his business empire which he inherited from his father but due to lack of business ethics and one big misstep, his fortunes came tumbling down. Just because he also became a part of the race to be on the top in this competitive world but if he would lead his business by following his social responsibilities and ethics right from the beginning this wouldn’t happen. Thereby children being the modern generation of new era has the power to change the thinking of the society around us, using the knowledge they gain through education so that the mistake which Vijay Mallya did as in above quoted example wouldn’t be repeated, So I think it is the relevant time to discuss whether social service be made compulsory in school or not.
According to my opinion it should not be made compulsory in school as the term itself say it is service and it is not something that could be forced into anyone. It is a form of inherent quality that comes from within. By compelling students to do service may give a negative impact. But there is a need to impart such a form of education and we can do this only by choosing appropriate age group to promote this form of education. So the importance of social service could be taught among the students right from the time when they are adaptive to learning new things because that is the development stage of an individual and as it is commonly said that the seeds which we sow during that time will reap us the fruits in future. But if teaching social service is made compulsory for teenagers it wouldn’t be all that fruitful, as teens generally tend to implement their personal ideas into action and not every teenager is being concerned enough to assist others with all their will.
So now what we should do so that it may not lead to negative result is that creating awareness among the needy people around us and build interest in them to do social services. To create awareness in schools, workshops can be conducted, students can be taken to visit orphanages to interact with old peoples, by donating food or clothes for needy people etc should be done and make them aware about their social responsibilities so that they may get attracted towards it and service comes voluntarily. Hence, the education department should consider all these things while implementing any rules regarding this compulsory social service in schools.
