Social Injustice. A self-chosen phrase that best describes the chaos that is currently happening in our society. A judgmental society full of discriminators, oppressors, and self-proclaimed adjudicators. Nevertheless, we are all born with a human nature that search for a feeling of belongingness. Due to that matter, we tend to incline our personality and perspective on the updated fads to receive public approval. A person’s attitude sometimes depend on what the society says about him. If all these judgmental issues of social injustice happened at once, what do you think would be the response of the victim? Would they fight back? Or would their lives serve as a changing agent in this world full of injustice people?
Weighed But Found Wanting. The title of the film might be denoted from the bible verse Daniel 5:27 which states “Tekel: you have been weighed in the balances and found wanting. ” A film directed by Lino Brocka also written by him with Mario O’Hara in 1974 starring Lolita Rodriguez as Kuala, Christopher de Leon as Junior, Mario O’Hara as Berto, Eddie Garcia as Cesar, Lilia Dizon as Carolina and Hilda Koronel as Evangeline. Originally released by Cinemanila. It is a tragedy film that depicts a story of an erroneous love and corrupted individuals who destroys peoples’ heart. It centers on a relationship of a homeless woman and a leper, Kuala and Berto living in a society that don’t accept them. Kuala and Berto became friends with Junior, a teenager who first seemed different from them but then develops a great bond with them. His first attempts to give them social acceptance are blocked by his town folks and his parents.
As I watch the film, I found out that there are people who are alienated in the community. Oppressors are present that’s why there are people who are outcasts and there are people who enjoy being superior to another. Moreover, I can see oppression in the film as Junior has a good status in life but has found its dark side. He is a son of two wealthy parents but his father is nothing but a womanizer and his mother is a nagger. They have this so-called Christian women association but are sort of villains in the film. Why? Because they said they are after God but how can they make rumors about people, judge them and let the poor Berto be an outcast of their own place? They said they are leading the entire place to a better society but they are bringing it to condemnation.
Also, marginalization took place and the hypocrisy of people there are reflected in a real-life situation which happens in our current generation. Sadly, some of them are even into a religion. Upon witnessing those inhuman judgments, the film lead my mind into a partial ravage. Hence, I was mind-blown by that breathtaking film which is a best example of Marxism. A tragic yet educating film which made me even ask myself about my stand in the society. The issues implied in the film are current issues which 2are present in the toxic society of this worst generation. There are social injustices, and no matter how good we serve others, our perception and action will always be twisted by other people. Whatever we do; good or bad, we will always be judged by those unfair people.
What’s sad in the film is not the corruption of a government or anything but the mere corruption of men themselves. In this society we are living in, it is not necessary to be perfect – we should embrace our flaws. We are made by God as who we are. Even if others are not, even if others cannot, even if others will not, we should be fair and just. We should be the light and a hope in this world full of darkness and toxicity.
