Medications for congestive heart failure

The medication that has to be administered to a patient with congestive heart failure to reduce the current symptoms, inhibit the development of myocardial damage and to enhance tolerance to physical activities and. The following medication has been proposed:

  • Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors
  • Benazepril (generic name) dosage: 5mg once a day with a diuretic
  • Brand names: Lotensin
  • Therapeutic function: Treatment of mild to moderate hypertension

Route of administration: Oral

This medication helps in treating high blood pressure, the left ventricular dysfunction and preventing stroke. The generic brands that exist in the US include benazepril (Lotensin), perindopril (Aceon), Ramipril (Altace) and quinapril (Accupril) among others (Ogbru, 2018). The type to be administered in this case will be angiotensin II. The most common side effects likely to be encountered include weakness, drowsiness, headache, high potassium levels in the blood, and extreme drop of blood pressure, rashes, and high acid level in the urine and chest pains.

Beta Blockers

Metoprolol (generic name) dosage: 25mg once a day

Brand names: Lopressor, Metoprolol Tartanate, Metoprolol Succinate ER and Toprol-XL

Therapeutic function: Lowering blood pressure by reducing cardiac output

Route of administration: Oral

This medication should only be introduced to the patient once his state has stabilized. Beta blockers are intended to prevent or improve blood pressure, heart rhythm, chest pains, prevent heart attack, migraine and heart failure. Some of the generic names that exist include acebutolol (Sectral), bisoprolol (Zebeta), nadolol (Corgard), atenolol (Tenormin) and nebivolol (Corgard). The probable side effects include fatigue, weight gain, diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, shortness of breath, depressions, and insomnia.


Metolazone (generic name) dosage: 2.5mg once a day (Zaroxolyn) or 0.5mg once a day (Mykrox)

Brand names: Zaroxolyn and Mykrox

Therapeutic function: Reduces the systolic and diastolic BPs

Route of administration: Oral

This type of medicine will help to reduce the symptoms of congestion which makes it useful for patients who exhibit symptoms of oedema (Health Line, 2018). Spironolactone is an example of a diuretic which has long-term paybacks. It must be understood that various classes of diuretics exist which include loop, thiazide, and potassium-sparing diuretics. Spironolactone is a potassium-sparing diuretic. Other generic versions that exist under the three classes include amiloride, ethacrynic acid, furosemide, metolazone, chlorthalidone, and indapamide. The most common side effects associated with these drugs include thirst, headache, increased blood sugar as well as potassium, dizziness, muscle cramps, diarrhea and increased cholesterol. Adverse reactions may comprise of kidney failure, irregular heartbeat, as well as extreme allergic reaction.
