Introduction

The term "hero" is commonly used in various contexts, but its true meaning is often overlooked or misunderstood. While fictional stories and fairy tales depict courageous individuals who triumph over adversity, the concept of a hero encompasses more than just bravery. This essay aims to delve into the multifaceted nature of heroes, exploring different perspectives and sources to provide a comprehensive understanding of what it truly means to be a hero.

Personal Understanding

In my personal view, a hero is a real human being or a character in a story who exhibits extraordinary courage and ability. These individuals are admired for their bravery, noble qualities, and their commitment to improving the well-being of others. A hero is someone who has accomplished something great or selfless in order to benefit their colleagues, relatives, friends, or even themselves (Dial 29). This definition also applies to women who have accomplished remarkable feats for the betterment of others.

Evidence of Heroes

There are numerous examples of heroes in various stories and publications. One notable example is Aeneas from Homer's "Iliad", a mythical hero who defends an entire city during the Trojan War. Aeneas embodies qualities such as courage, commitment, love for his country, and unpredictability. Another example is the story of Icarus from Greek mythology, where his failure to exhibit heroic traits leads to his downfall (Pan 1438). By attempting to fly with artificial wings, Icarus falls into the sea, highlighting the importance of selflessness, courage, and actions that align with the needs of others in becoming a true hero.

Nature of Heroes

The concept of heroism has evolved over time, but there are specific traits that define individuals who meet the minimum threshold of being a true hero. Such individuals are concerned about the challenges faced by members of their community and take swift action to help or prevent any form of danger that may affect them (Pan 1439). These heroes are often empathetic and possess the ability to empower their peers to succeed in life. Additionally, heroes exhibit unique characteristics such as selflessness, patience, care, humility, and courage. They are brave and willing to face any obstacle to save or rescue vulnerable individuals (Keczer et al. 8). These heroes strive to do what is right and protect citizens from harm, utilizing their talents and skills to achieve greatness where others have failed. Aspiring heroes should consider these attributes when striving to become true heroes.

Core Values of Integrity and Excellence

In addition to the aforementioned attributes, heroes are guided by core values that contribute to their success. Integrity is a crucial value that compels heroes to do what is right, even when no one is watching (Dial 56). They solve problems amicably and avoid causing harm to others. Heroes develop philosophies of life that guide their interactions with others, meeting their demands, and completing tasks. This makes them ethical, honest, and reliable individuals. Another core value, excellence, plays a significant role in the hero's journey. Heroes focus on attaining the best possible outcomes and work diligently for the sake of their followers or counterparts. They continuously strive to acquire new skills and seek advice when necessary, avoiding mistakes and encouraging others to do the same (Keczer et al. 12). By embodying these core values, heroes can achieve remarkable results in a timely manner and positively impact the lives and experiences of those around them.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the concept of heroism encompasses various qualities and attributes that distinguish individuals as heroes. These include selflessness, courage, care, and patience. However, the definition of heroism can take different forms depending on an individual's commitments and achievements.
