The Negative Effects of Tuition Fees in College on a Student

The moment when you have to choose whether you go to a private institution or a public one, is a step in life that everybody has to pass. Unfortunately, parents have a big role to play in that decision, depending on their capacity to pay or not for their child’s education as much as their believes about the positive effects of private versus tuition-less schools on the student’s future of attending both kind of school. I personally attended a private institution in the past and I've heard stories about students my age paying for their own education. I know now that it’s way more frequent in college, therefore I’m going to talk about the negative effects of paying your own education. The stress related to tuition fees, the student-loan debt and the fall of graduation rates will be discussed in that paper.

To start off, I think that the weight of stress related to tuition fees pressing on the shoulders of students is one of the most important aspects of this thesis. “Seven out of ten college students feel stressed about their personal finances”. That feeling of always running after money affects the focus, the grades and the health of students. To pay for their tuition fees, students often lose focus of the actual goal of paying so much money, which is get a degree and find the job that will make you happy. For that, you need good grades, but most students who pay their fees without parents support work two jobs at a time, so they don’t have as much time as a regular student to study before exams, then the grades get affected. “It can be damaging if it takes a priority over self-governed studies. And by filling spare time with work, you leave less time to expand your brain power on assignments and studying for classes.” The health also has a huge impact on academic performances, to pay for the monthly expenses, majority of students skips meals so they can spend money on things that are considered more crucial in their academic success. As we already know, a healthy lifestyle helps perform in every sphere of our lives, but students who suffer from undernourishment due to a strict budget could face some difficulties such as a lack of focus or motivation. For example, it would be a good idea for educational institutions requiring a big amount of money to set a goal grade on each class to every student and then offer a pretty significant reduction on their fee if they surpass that goal. Thus, students would make their schooling a priority and the academic range of the school would go up by the new motivation in students.

In addition, the admission process can be stressful and difficult for the applicants with fear that they might not get into their first-choice program because of the high tuition. A lot of students end up being enrolled in studies that they don’t enjoy but that are affordable, and for them, a not enjoyable education is better than none. Free education allows young adults to get in a field of studies that interest them and if they are interested, they’re less likely to drop out or burn out. I don't have time to sleep and do assignments if I also have to do 4 hours of readings per class.” By that, we can see that her hours of work are taking a greater place in her week than her scheduled hours of classes which does not work in a student’s academical favor. The level of college dropouts is humongous, but people don’t seem to pay attention to it because a college student is old enough to make its own decision. Why aren’t we putting more thoughts into the reason they chose to terminate their collegial studies? Maybe if we did more people would realize that the pressure of working to pay the big amount schools demand can easily create depression or health issues, making them obligated to put a term on their semester. More and more students are thinking of giving up because the weight put on their shoulders is getting really heavy. A survey was done by MagnifyMoney on 3069 students which is a really little number, it’s nothing compared to the number of students in only one university. They found out that those with loans would give a serious thought about dropping out of school before even graduating, only to avoid taking on more debts. “However, the magnitude of the debt isn’t the main reason students would consider giving up. More than half say they’d consider dropping out because it’s difficult to balance school with a job.” Our students need to be released from all this unhealthy burden!

Moreover, on a humane angle, it doesn’t fit an equality form that those working in less-paid fields will bypass on good offers being handed to them on a regular basis. It would be fair to say that schools as much as job offers should always be welcoming every race and every social status individuals. Though it may be real that something is available, it shouldn’t be guaranteed that someone will receive that opportunity, the occasion shouldn’t be excluded. For instance, everybody must be allowed to have a qualification in hope to work as a pilot or any other position involved in the air traffic control, and nevertheless a visually impaired human is rarely promised such a working offer, the lucky chance shouldn’t be banned as a default. “Free education, especially free higher education, may open up a series of opportunities that some people would otherwise be unable to enjoy, and even if those opportunities are not guaranteed, they shouldn’t be ruled out by default, which is what happens when some people cannot use higher education for financial reasons.”

Finally, If a scholar is precisely searching out to pursue their academic journey at a greater level and isn’t choosing some random classes to let time pass by for them to figure out what he or she wants to do with their life and put too many years to waste by making use of other people’s tax money and take advantage of the tuition-less system when others could really use their place, then such a human being may enjoy an education path that takes longer. To conclude, regardless of the honorable pros and cons that come with having a tuition-free academic journey for scholars, at the end, it’s the Colleges and Universities that will diminish it. Nowadays, student go for an easier way to get their money right away and it’s with student’s loans, and the schools knowing that there’s an easier way for the scholars to get money, they put their prices higher and higher to an unimaginable extent , and by those actions colleges and Universities are opening up courses that aren’t useful at all for the people that want to enroll in the workforce. “If colleges and Universities were being fully funded by tax dollars, they would encourage students to join with a whole host of silly and frivolous programs because the quality of education would no longer matter or apply.”
