Academic writing is crucial in our daily lives. When being taught to write, it is in a simple and easy manner. As we get older, it becomes more structured and controlled. Proper writing takes place after many years of practice. With practice, one can develop their writing skills to an academic level. It is important to achieve good academic writing, in order to better communicate ones thoughts and research in a clear manner. This will enhance important skills to lead a successful life, during and after school. In this essay, I will discuss the importance of good academic writing, as well as the consequences of poor academic writing.

Academic writing is not just about how professional you sound. Establishing good academic writing, involves producing high quality logical content with fair arguments, suitable diction, formal structure and correct sentence construction, with accurate grammar and punctuation. It is also vital to acknowledge any sources that you have used in your assignment, whether as, in-text citation, direct quotation, paraphrasing, or using a reference list.

Using proper academic writing helps develop ones critical thinking ability. When writing assignments, one has to do in depth research about the topic at hand. This involves deciding what is relevant or irrelevant, cross referencing information and using the information to properly prove your point. Thus, improving one’s ability to think, due to the research done on the problem and deciding on a suitable solution. The amount of thorough research that is done broadens and increases a students’ knowledge on a significant amount of topics. With this knowledge, one is able to better discuss and explain their argument when writing assignments.

Writing a concise and comprehensive essay increases ones probability of acquiring good marks. Using good academic language allows for a meticulous flow throughout the essay. This assists the marker in reading the essay in a straightforward manner. Using good academic writing also shows the marker that you know what you are talking about, which helps further get your point across, boosting your marks.

Good academic writing is not only necessary for our studies, but also, in our working environment. The skills obtained when studying, are carried with us as we progress in our lives. Having good academic writing is helpful when, writing reports, documents, emails and formal letters. Critical thinking is also essential to complete tasks and solve problems.

Good academic writing is a requirement to the level of success one wants to achieve, both in and out of school. Thus, there are consequences of poor academic writing. Not completing assignments in an educated manner, may confuse the marker, or result in the wrong point being made. This results in low marks. These low marks may not be enough for a student to meet their required pass marks, thus having to repeat the module. Not only does this result in having to spend more money, but it also lead to low morale. As they feel despondent and unenthusiastic about the course work now. Poor academic writing also results in one being unprepared and possibly incapable to handle tasks in a working environment. Being unequipped in the job field, can lead to one missing out on big career advancing opportunities.

People often misinterpret what a text is saying. Therefore if the writing and language used is unclear, people may interpret it as brash or negative, leaving people feeling offended.
