Introduction: The topic of this essay is why I want to become a nurse. Background: As just an only child from Canyon Lake, Texas, I have always been a helper. From taking out the trash to folding the laundry. This trait has followed me forever and I believe that it will take me far in what I want to be a nurse.

Topic sentence: The path of me wanting to be a nurse and deciding on that is kind of winding. Evidence & citing: Let’s just say when I was nine I wanted to be a Professional Tap Dancer. But as I grew up I found that I loved the study of human behavior and medical work with television shows like Criminal Minds and NCIS. At age fifteen I had wanted to be a Forensic Pathologist, the people that tell you how someone has died. You should have seen my English teacher’s face when we had to present my “What I want to be when I grow up” research paper, it was funny to me.

Evidence & citing: Then sophomore year of high school I feel in love with chemistry. So next profession in my mind was a Pharmacist, the research part of this career was interesting to me. I would be creating new drugs to help save people. As I researched the education of becoming a pharmacist I realised if I go to college and graduate with a Pre-Pharmacy degree and end up not going to Pharmacy school all I could do was teach chemistry. And that's not want I wanted. So I sat down a really thought about what I was good at and a crossroads in all my interests. Nursing. I had never really considered it but it made perfect sense.

Topic sentence: When I was little I use to play doctor with my dad and dress fake injuries and check his temperature. It was also in my blood. Evidence & citing: My grandmother had been a nurse in the Army during World War II, and hearing about the pride she felt every day by helping people in her job has inspired my own interest in the field. Then I dove deeper learning that there are so many different kinds of nursing like Cardiovascular, Radiology, and Post-anesthesia care. I could even be a traveling nurse anywhere in or out of the country. But the one that fit me like a glove was a Psychiatric-mental health Nurse Practitioner. Commentary: It ties my love for human behavior in with my passion for nursing.

Topic sentence: On the path to becoming a nurse it takes more than just a degree and knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Commentary: The caring and compassion of a nurse must be unparalleled. From holding a patient’s hand when they’re nervous about a procedure, listening to their concerns, to comforting a frightened child or parents during an intense situation. Topic sentence: When asking why you want to be a nurse, you should firstly understand what makes a good nurse. Evidence & citing: In fact, Nebraska Methodist University broke it down into six key traits.

Commentary: Number one: Compassion. “Having a deep awareness of and sympathy for someone else’s suffering without judgment”.

Number two: Respect, to always, “say what you mean and mean what you say, behaving fairly and ethically in every circumstance”.

Number three: Being calm under pressure, “When you need to make quick decisions in a medical situation, keeping your cool is vital. People who make great nurses are naturally level-headed, but your education plays a big role here too. Confidence grows through knowledge”.

Number four: Being detail oriented, “Doctors and patients rely on nurses to be focused and careful. The best nurses are meticulous, paying attention to the smallest details because they know just how important they are.

Number Five: Communication, “Great nurses are clear communicators who truly listen to patient needs – and make sure to acknowledge that those patients' concerns are being heard.''

And finally the knowledge you gain in your education allows you to use “critical thinking and communication skills, patient assessment skills, understanding disease management protocols and development of care plans”.
