The Save the Children Fund, commonly known as Save the Children, is an international non-governmental organisation that promotes children’s rights, provides help and support to children in developing countries.
Save the Children’s founder, Eglantyne Jebb Save the Children members worldwide, help children in 120 countries, providing support for health, education, protection, disaster relief and so much more. They have worked in Asia for 30 years where they helped over 17 million children. From responding to massive earthquakes, tsunamis and cyclones, to providing lifesaving health care and nutrition to children in poor nations, they work in the poorest and most defenceless communities throughout the continent.
Conflict and the worst drought in 70 years has left nearly 20 million people in Africa in need of food and water. Somalia is on the brink of famine. In Nigeria, up to 90,000 children could die this year from severe malnutrition. Millions more in Kenya and Ethiopia need help urgently.
The causes of this unprecedented food crisis range from prolonged drought to violence, but the devastating consequences are the same: children are struggling to survive. The littlest children, weakened by malnutrition, are more vulnerable to life-threatening diseases. In response, Save the Children is on the ground now, providing lifesaving support – and saving alives.
These are the main two sites where Save the children works but there are over 120 countries receiving help from them, especially in places like the Middle East, USA, and South America. Around the world, they give children a healthy start in life and give them the opportunity to learn and get educated. They do whatever it takes for children to study. Save the Children supports education programs for children in the classroom and at home: They train teachers to engage their students through more effective teaching practices. They coach parents and caregivers to help their children learn early on, so they are prepared to enter school. They offer ways for parents and community volunteers to get kids reading and doing math outside of school hours.
They introduce children to the power of artistic expression — drawing, painting, music, drama, dance and more — to help them heal, learn and do better in school. They make sure that children don’t stop learning during a crisis, and they help to keep kids healthy so they don’t fall behind or drop out. To help parents provide for their children’s basic needs, Save the Children’s Hunger and Livelihoods programs focus on improving the food supply, farming practices and finances of families in need: They provide basic food staples to families following a natural disaster or emergency. They teach parents about the importance of providing their children with the right variety of foods to prevent malnutrition. They train small-scale farmers on how to prevent the loss of crops or livestock due to drought, floods or disease. They guide family farmers on how to grow more nutritious foods, in larger quantities to eat or to sell, and how to raise animals for meat, eggs or milk.
They help families access basic financial products such as savings or insurance so they can persevere through challenging times, or start and expand their small businesses. Their work simply couldn’t happen without the amazing supporters who raise the money that funds it. Your fundraisers can be anything from marathons to cake competitions, it could even be silly sports days. In 2016 14.7 million children have been aided in different situations including hiv aids pneumonia and more. Information about children aided in 2017 is still being gathered but in 2018 they are hoping to increase the amount of children aided in 2016 drastically.
