Cinco De Mayo is Mexico’s second biggest national holiday. The first biggest is the Mexican Independence Day on September 16. On May 5, 1862 2,000 Mexican peasants drove back 6,000 French troops. The French troops were supposed to be the best trained in the world and didn’t expect a fight. Cinco De Mayo is a celebration of how the non-Europeans had a right to govern themselves. Even though it is mostly celebrated in countries like the U.S. with drinking, Cinco De Mayo is celebrated in Mexico too. Several Mexican towns have days of speeches about the battles. The speeches are usually long and talk about how important it is to fight for what you believe in against the odds and not give up. Other towns even have parades.
The Battle of Puebla is re-enacted in many places. Cinco de Mayo is more than just a day to celebrate victory; it is also to celebrate Hispanic culture and heritage. There are lots of huge fairs with Mexican music and food. The fairs usually have costumes and dancing and fireworks and other kinds of Mexican entertainment. People perform the Mexican Hat Dance and the Raspa Dance while mariachi bands play. Cinco De Mayo is also a day where the U.S. thinks about its friendship with Mexico. In the United States most people who celebrate Cinco de Mayo do it by drinking.
