Each year in SkillsUSA they always have a theme. This year’s theme is SkillsUSA: Champions at Work, Job Ready Day One. What does Job Ready Day One mean? Well to me, Job Ready Day One means that you already know the materials and tasks that need to be fulfilled in your work area. It also means that you’ll know what to do if there is a problem. In order to be a Job Ready Day One, you’ll need a specific skills and abilities. You’ll need problem-solving skills, time management abilities, good communication skills, decision making, the ability to work under pressure, and the ability to accept and learn from criticism. You need these skills and abilities in order to be a Job Ready Day One because if you don’t have them, you won’t get hired at any job.
The top three skills or abilities that are important are is problem-solving skills, time management abilities, and good communication skills. These skills or abilities are important because for problem-solving skills you need to know because in the workforce employers they want you to know this stuff before hiring you. Time management abilities are important too because if you show up at your job late you’ll have to deal with the consequences and also how to open and close in your work area. Also good communication skills are important too because in the workforce you’ll need to know how to talk to bosses, managers, and customers. To demonstrate to an employer that you are job-ready day one, you need to make sure that you are there on time for your interview. That's when you show your time management skills because an employer doesn’t want someone that is late. You want to look professional and be ready for the questions that they are going to ask you.
When they are asking questions to you, you want to use your good communication skills because they don’t want someone who is rude and talks causal. If it’s a job that is all about showing work or designs you probably want to be prepared and have a portfolio and show the work that you have done. In my cosmetology class there are many ways that we emulates the workforce. One way is that when we have clients we need to have good communication skills because as a cosmetologist we always need to talk to our clients and make sure that if they like how their hair is or if they want something different. Another way is time management because in cosmetology if you have a client booked for a haircut and a client wants a pedicure you need to know how long is it for a haircut and pedicure and see if they can book in for the pedicure. Another way is to deal with criticism. In our cosmetology class everything that we do people will judge about our work and see if it’s perfect or not.
Another way is problem-solving skills. In the cosmetology room we need to know how to do that because if something happens when we cut hair or there is drama we need to know how to solve that issue with no problem. In SkillsUSA they helps us prepare for us to be job ready day one in many ways. They help us with time management skills, and good communication and other soft skill. SkillsUSA helps us to be job ready day one by telling us what material and skills we need to bring.
