My best question about “the Uberization of work” would be, could someone really live off of this type of career and income? Yes, this job is an easy way to make some extra money on the side, but I don’t really feel that someone could make a living off this type of job. It is definitely convenient to do this type of job because you work at your own pace, whether you want to or not. Personally, I do not feel this trend would impact my own career just because this type of job doesn’t really have my interest. Although, I do feel it could impact others careers, just because of how convenient it is.
After reviewing this week’s material from what I understand, I see the positives and the negatives on the “globalization continuum”. As humans we are sort of part of this globalization continuum, which is why it has increased so much over time. Where I see myself on the globalization continuum would probably be as a “reformer”. According to this week’s presentation, reformers are “those who support globalization with reservations, believing that markets should be promoted and international barriers to trade and investment should be reduced, but that government regulation can help mitigate some of the harder aspects of the new changes”. I would have to say I see myself here because honestly there is so much production and trade in today’s world. Although, I do see the problems with globalization, especially the many issues it has years ago, such as child labor and women in globalization. Thankfully some of these issues have become better overtime. Another reason I’d say I would consider myself a reformer is because of technology, it is a huge driver in globalization today. It has changed our economy so much, especially with people’s careers and makes everything so much faster. However, I do feel that health and safety is most important in any situation.
Yes, I think CSR is likely to contribute to safer work in the U.S. because it is said “... it is intended to aid an organization’s mission as well as to guide what the company stands for and will uphold to its consumers.” It seems that this is a safer option for businesses. The CSR program is used by many popular companies, such as BP, Starbucks, and PSE&G. I have articles and news broadcasts about how Starbucks and their employees have taken the extra step in many things, such as health, safety, and even customer service. According to an article in this week’s presentation, Kim Fellner states “... Starbucks “fair trade” programs do make a positive difference in the lives coffee growers.” PSE&G is also said to have had workers that “did not suffer any serious injuries and had zero fatalities during Sandy response and recovery work.” After reading these articles in the presentation, I feel CSR is a good contributor to safer work in the United States.
