The Way Technology Has Changed The World

My question is about technology and how it influences the modern world and whether the invention of technology has impacted us in a good or bad way. The topic I’m researching about is important because there are so many people who are addicted to their phone, iPad or computer. This topic is also relevant because in the modern world more and more technology is being invented with many flaws. My topic was interesting to me from the start because my parents always say how they didn’t have all the technology we have today and I just wanted to explore how far technology has changed this world and in what ways. Because of technology a lot of people are deprived of quality family time. The invention of technology has made life easier but not allowed people to stand on their own two feet and do things for themselves. People have different opinions on my topic because technology has helped significantly in the way that if it’s an emergency it’s easier to contact the police or ambulance. On the other hand, technology has changed our life drastically in the way that social media can change people in a bad way and the invention of technology has taken away human jobs. In one way this can be good because humans have been replaced with dangerous machines which helps us work in a safer environment however there are a lot of job losses due to the invention of technology.

Research

From my survey that I’ve conducted, more than 50% of people couldn’t live without technology for at least 2 days however a lot of people said technology has made communication easier and that they feel more safer knowing they can be tracked. From my survey most people said that technology makes us spend less time with our families and neglect our studies. Also, sources that I’ve found proves that technology has had a bad impact as it’s made people commit suicide due to social media but it has also had a good impact as we can shop online etc. and we don’t have to leave the comfort of our own home. The youth of today are constantly immersed in technological advancements that promote nonstop communication and it isolates individuals from reality. Statistics show that those who use the Internet frequently spend over 100 minutes less time with friends and family than non-Internet users, according to Norman H. For my information I’ve conducted a survey and gathered information from different age groups and got information about what Kara Alaimo (global public relations consultant, trainer, and professor) thinks from Ted Talks and what Nita Farahany says about technology. I’ve also gathered information from news articles etc. This shows that my information is reliable. From my survey that I’ve conducted the most surprising result was that more older people use technology more and for a longer period of time compared to students who use it for 3-4 hours on average. My initial hypothesis was that students use technology for longer hours than adults but my results from my survey proved to be the opposite.

Discussion

Technology has played a significant role in our lives in a good and bad way. Technology has allowed us to contact family and friends easily which are on the other side of the world and allowed us to be safer as we can be easily tracked. Technological advancements play a vital role in our everyday life. But the fact is technology also has some adverse effect on the world. Believe it or not but the fact is, today we are slaves of technology and it is ruining the lives of kids as well as adults. Kids and teens nowadays remain glued to their seats wasting time in surfing the net and social media. The worst thing about technology is that there’s less concentration on things that are important in life like education and family.

On the contrary the invention of technology is beneficial to humans for several reasons. Due to advances in technology, doctors are finding more cures to treat cancer. Companies can now communicate more easily with foreign countries and research is also made easier. For companies, sales and purchases are now made simpler and possible worldwide. This allows businesses to buy items with discounts or at reduced prices. In the modern world, machines carry out most of the industrial work and as a result, workers produce much more goods than a decade ago and work less. They are now able to work in safer environments.

On the other hand, it is true that modern technology has increased the security but at the same time, it is to be blamed for the thefts happening. Our personal information is linked to the internet. There are thousands of cases reported every month that include online theft, hacking, phishing and spreading of viruses. Also, due to technology there’s increased dependency on modern tools like calculators and spell checkers which have reduced our creativity and intelligence. In the modern world many people struggle with spelling even basic words without an editor to confirm every word and others find it impossible to do basic math without a calculator. Though these tools assist us to make us more efficient, we become excessively reliant on them.

Technology has changed our life in an exceptional way. It’s now a concept that we cannot survive without. It helps us obtain knowledge through the internet, and it helps us entertain ourselves with films and music. Healthcare has become quite advanced thanks to technology, and equipment has minimized errors in medicine. Education is another aspect of our life that technology has changed for better. The amount of information available over the internet in the form of images, books, audio and video is massive. For instance, there are online courses that help you get more knowledge without any need to visit the physical facilities which means you can learn wherever you live. Therefore technology has changed our lives in a good way as it has enabled us to have more concentration on our studies as you can study anywhere.

On the other hand, technology has changed our lives for the worst because the most effective thing in our lives today is mobile phones which are considered a show of civilization. Owing to the many changes taking place in the technological world, the dependency on technology is growing with each passing and doesn’t allow students to concentrate effectively on their studies. Furthermore, the Internet has permitted individuals to bully others online. Cyber bullying affects kids and teenagers very severely; according to BBC News and online facts 16% of teens are cyberbullied and 8% of them commit suicide. Unfortunately, due to technology it seems like people forget how to appropriately communicate with each other. More and more young people do not know the basics of healthy communication because they spend more hours typing than actually talking to each other. Technology, especially social media impacts our productivity. Today, one of our biggest struggles is to give up our addiction to social media and it really seems like an impossible thing to do. Nowadays it is very easy to get distracted therefore not be productive or motivated since we have all these kinds of distractions around us.

Evaluation

Overall my findings have shown that technology has changed the world in more bad ways than good ways. From my research it shows that technology has had a more bad than good impact as it has distanced us more from our family. However, technology has had a good impact as well as a bad impact because machines are taking over dangerous jobs that humans used to do. From my questionnaire majority of people had more disadvantages of technology than advantages. This therefore shows that technology has had a bad impact on most people. For me technology has helped significantly as it has made learning easier for me and made me feel safer as my parents can now track me however, I personally believe that the invention of technology has made me drift more away from my extended family and some close relatives. Although the invention of technology makes me safer, I’m drifting away from my family with each passing day which is already bad enough. Imagine what would happen in 20 years where people would be even more dependent on technology and neglect their studies and families. As well as there being strong advantages there’s been major disadvantages. Overall from the sources I’ve looked at and other people’s opinions, I can strongly agree that the invention of technology has had an adverse effect on the world.

Conclusion

During the course of this project I have learned that the invention of technology has benefits and disadvantages. I’ve also learnt different people’s view of technology and how results differ because of age groups. Also I have learnt new life skills like making a Gantt chart, bibliography and questionnaire. Towards the end I had changed my view as I had initially thought that technology has more advantages than disadvantages but from looking at other people’s responses and what Nita Farahany thinks I have changed my views on technology. From looking at the responses from my questionnaire I have realized how there are more disadvantages and how there’s going to be more disadvantages with new gadgets being invented frequently. From the whole project I have mainly learnt how there are so many bad things happening in the world and how technology and social media blows things out of proportion and makes everything worse. During my project I emailed 17 professors and CEO’s for my primary research but unfortunately none of them gave useful responses so if I was to do something different, I would email people who are not as popular but still experienced in the technology field. What worked well throughout the course of this project was managing my time well and finishing tasks before the deadline.
