When I first move to the United State, I had to learn a lot of things from scratch, from learning to understand the language to adapting to the cultural differences. For many, this presents a challenge: adapting to a foreign environment requires learning new social rules and practices and often new ways of behaving. Furthermore, a new culture requires a new level of tolerance. This is not always an easy process to go through. However, through education, creating valuable relationships and a positive attitude, it is possible to help immigrants to gradually get used to the new environment. We as immigrants should be asked to contribute to America instead of being isolated because immigrants contribute to the economy, contribute more in tax revenue than they take in government benefits and are also less likely to commit crime than native born citizen.
There are infinite reasons why a person decides to immigrate to America– they may be cultural, educational or work-related purposes. I believe that most immigrant want to blend into a society and feel welcome. I think that people feel more comfortable hanging out or talking with people from their own culture because they have more things in common. My Goal is to build a community center for each particular ethnic group in different cities. The community center will help immigrants work as peers, so that they could succeed based on their accomplishments, regardless of education, background or economic status. Before they join the workforce, they will learn the language and different work and life skills. This will also eliminate potential barriers faced by immigrants entering the workforce.
Immigrants contribute to the economy, but Americans think they take jobs away from them and are a drain on the economy. According to I.Z.A “Immigration’s positive effects far outweigh any negative impact. Migrants choose locations with available jobs and fill labor shortages. Whether high- or low-skilled, migrants rarely substitute directly for native workers. Instead, migrants often complement native workers or accept jobs that natives don’t want or can’t do. They create new jobs by increasing production, engaging in self-employment, and easing upward job mobility for native workers. The presence of immigrants increases demand and can spur new businesses to open, creating more jobs for immigrant and native populations'.
In addition to that, Immigrant contribute more in tax revenue than they take in government benefits, but the truth is vice versa. This Article implies “Immigrants play an increasingly pivotal role in the U.S. economy. Every American benefit from the taxes that immigrants pay and from the money they spend on consumer goods and services. Their participation in the economy creates a demand for goods and services, thereby boosting job growth. This fact sheet is one of a series of papers examining the various roles immigrants play in our economy. It highlights research illuminating the role that immigrants play in helping cover the cost of public services at the local, state, and federal level, and how their spending contributes to the U.S. economy. These immigrant contributions are often overlooked, but they significantly benefit all Americans'.
Furthermore, Immigrants are less likely to commit crime than native born citizen. They aren’t the ones who bring crime to America. Study shows that “It is difficult to know whether illegal immigrants are more likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans are. All immigrants have a lower criminal incarceration rate and there are lower crime rates in the neighborhoods where they live, according to the near-unanimous findings of the peer-reviewed evidence. Since 1911, large nationwide federal immigration commissions have asked whether immigrants are more crime-prone than native-born Americans and each one of them answered no, even when the rest of their reports unjustifiably blamed immigrants for virtually every problem in the United States. From the 1911 Immigration Commission, also known as the Dillingham Commission, to the 1931 Wickersham Commission, and 1994’s Barbara Jordan Commission, each has reported that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans'.
To end up, this paper was about the myth and fact about immigrants in America. Too often, people see immigrants as a problem that needs to be administered, instead of an opportunity that we should all invest in. If we create a safe environment for immigrant, there is no way that we can’t all grow together. I believe that most of the people want to blend into society and feel welcome. I still don’t understand why people care a lot about fitting into society when we could all create our own. If the people would not care for religion or nationalities America would be a better place to live without discrimination instead of caring to fit in a better society, we all should care for better things.
