The Cost of Education, and its Comparisons to the Outcomes

Education is the process that enables an individual to acquire specific knowledge, skills, and values (Hajiyev). Often, education takes place under the guidance of educators, although students may as well choose to educate themselves. Formally, education is divided into different levels such as kindergarten, primary school, secondary school and higher learning or tertiary levels (Hajiyev).

In the modern world, every child has a right to education. Additionally, this law is enshrined and recognized by various government across the globe. In some countries, education is compulsory to all the learners up to a certain age. That notwithstanding, it’s really difficult to determine the accurate costs of educating a child. However, according to previous studies, educating a child will cost between $4000 to $20,000 per annum for each child depending on the education level of the child, and the type of school (Hajiyev).

For instance, some parents may prefer to have their children home educated. This brings about challenges and a different insight with regards to evaluating the real cost of education. This is because this method of education is somewhat successful, as well as on a tight budget and on nothing close to the findings of previous studies.

Nevertheless, when the comparison is made between the cost of educating a child and the respective outcomes associated with education, the outcomes are always on the upper hand. Regardless of the amount spent on education, the child becomes healthy in mind and body and develops a zest for life. As a result, the child becomes a confident person in the society, one who has a strong sense of right and wrong and thinks independently (Hajiyev).

In addition, despite the cost of education, on completion of the learning process, the student becomes an active contributor to the society. A person who is able to work effectively, and one who exercises an initiative and strives for excellence. Ultimately, a learned person often takes calculated risks and becomes a concerned citizen with informed and firm civic consciousness (Hajiyev). Therefore, when comparing the cost of educating a child to the outcomes, the outcomes outweighs the amount spent on education.

Moral Education

Moral education is a wide term used in describing the teaching process of children in a manner that it is appropriate in helping them develop and grow intellectually. Thus, it enlightens students and equips them with socially acceptable ethics, helps them develop their morals, maintain their health, behavior, and success (Durkheim). As such, moral education provides students with the intellectual capacity that enables them to make informed and responsible decisions, particularly in matters concerning moral significance (Durkheim).

Some of the concepts and paths of moral educations include but not limited to social and emotional learning, ethical reasoning, health education and cognitive development (Durkheim). Often, these programs provide various principles, values, and virtues such as honesty, equality, courage, freedom, and kindness which guides and evaluates the process and effectiveness of the exercise.

However, the approaches of moral education that I find most appealing are moral development and values clarification. This is because these paths encompass core values such as integrity, stewardship, kindness, respect etc. which helps the child develop his/her emotional intelligence, and consequently helping him/her see through difficult hurdles of life. Additionally, apart from enhancing the academic performance of students, moral development and values clarification produces righteous and upright human beings making the world a better place to live in. Therefore, moral development and values clarification is the most paths of moral education that appeals to me the most.

Charter School

Before designing and making a decision to come up with a charter school, it’s important to do due diligence before establishing it. As such, before the establishment, I will ensure that the school is compliant with charter school laws and check for the legality of the school in my intended location or region of the establishment. This is because each state has different legislations of operating a charter school, and hence the need to determine whether the charter schools are permitted in the State I want to build (Deal and Hentschke).

After determining the legality of the charter school, then the second stage and equally important is to check for capacity limits. This is because depending on my place of residence, I may not be ineligible to open a charter school due to capacity limits. After checking for the capacity limits and determining if new schools are allowed, I will assess my level of commitment so as to ensure that I will be able to stick to the project and work closely with other people to bring the vision it life (Deal and Hentschke).

Thereafter, the concept will be drafted with a written mission statement of the school clearly stating its vision and the chosen location of the establishment. After which, a board of governance is established and a budget created. Then I will draft and submit a letter of intent to my State’s department of education website and wait for approval after which I will open the charter school if its approved (Deal and Hentschke).

Nonetheless, I would incorporate some unique factors in the school because I feel they would enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the institution. For instance, I would incorporate quality and able leadership. This is because I believe the success and better performance of the school are attributed to good governance and strong leadership from the heads of the school (Betts and Hill). As well, effective leaders are visible as they communicate the goals, vision, and mission of the school with teacher and students, enhancing their skills and working closely towards the common goal of the school (Betts and Hill).

In addition, the school will have a periodic and ongoing evaluation of the student's performance. Effective assessment of students allows the teacher to identify problematic areas of learning of each and every student (Betts and Hill). This will enable teachers to come up with the most suitable solutions to address different needs of each student as per the findings of the assessment.

Finally, I think it’s important to ensure the safety of the school as well as of the students. According to previous studies, the success of schools is achieved when the students feel secure and the school is organized. Maximum learning and concentration take place when students feel secure (Betts and Hill). As a result, I would ensure the safety of the institution so as to achieve the overall effectiveness of the school.
