Biomedical Engineering is the exercise of engineering principles for the benefit of medicine health. Biomedical engineers do a wide variety of jobs that can include research and develop medical products; designing or modifying equipment for clients with special needs or managing clinical equipment in hospitals and medical facilities.

Duties of Biomedical Engineers could include design and develop medical devices such as artificial hearts and kidneys, pacemakers, artificial hips, and surgical lasers. Adapt computer hardware and software for medical science or health care applications. They also would conduct research to test, ensure the safety of equipment used for diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring. Similar to any other jobs, these engineers supervise and train technologists and technicians.

Biomedical Engineers earn a median hourly wage of $41.45. The hourly wages typically start from $24.75 and could go up to $67.08. Salaries typically start from $51,480 and go up to $139,520. Biomedical engineers get pay more than 40% of Engineering careers. Biomedical engineering salaries are in the top 85% of paying salaries in the US. Biomedical Engineers earn a median hourly wage of $41.45.

Biomedical engineers work in offices, laboratories, workshops, clinics, and hospitals. Biomedical engineers work in teams with scientists, healthcare workers, or other engineers. Where and how they work depends on the project. If the engineer finds a way to improve the device, he or she might have to return to the manufacturer to help alter the manufacturing process in order to improve the design. Most biomedical engineers work standard weekday hours. Longer hours may be required to meet research deadlines.

In high school, Science courses like Chemistry, Physics, Biology prepare the future engineer for the rigorous engineering courses in college or the intense amount of work in the training. Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus could be taking as math courses to further the knowledge and experience. Not every school has Engineering or engineering-related course; if they are available, it is highly recommended to take them because they will expose the students for the real world of engineering.

Bachelor’s Degree in Biomedical or Bioengineering. Courses like Computer Programing, Advanced Physiology, Drafting and laboratory-based course. A Graduate’s Degree is not required but recommended for students that want to lead a research team. University education is not the only way to become an engineer, many internships, and training programs that aspiring engineers could enroll to familiarize themselves with the job. Internships and on-site training could substitute the education that traditional engineers receive in school.
