This paper explores the research based on five sources that will aid in the report of material into the fascinating topic of American sexuality and how it relates to the twenty-first century. The articles and research methods vary in the explanation into sexuality in the twenty-first century. Hooks wrote an interesting article in which the concluded various examples and stereotypes of how Black females are viewed sexually within a society where over sexualization is often and topic of issue. However, other articles suggest that American sexuality focuses on more than one race as a whole and relates to the issue of how it includes aspects of psychological, emotional, physical and spiritual effects of an individual and how it plays a role in their sexuality. This paper examines the culture in how authors such as Hooks,Duncan,Varney,Duschinsky and Synder research gives and insight on the reasons, effects and methods into how American Sexualization changed over the twenty-first century time period.
In order to develop an analysis or answer to sexuality in American society one must get an idea as to how it started and how the originality of sexuality effects sexiality in todays society.Beginning with history,in the nineteenth century there was a strict code in sexuality in which each person followed in order to be “accepted” by society and their standards . Duschinsky(2003) says “In America, this potential danger justified continual social and supervision of the child, to ensure that an inappropriate form of sexuality did not intrude upon its natural innocence”.When the conversation of sexuality first emerged there was of course only one standard to live by and most of society enforced traditional means of sexuality such;male and female relationships, certain relationships are not prohibited in those particular environments.
Concepts affect sexuality in the twenty first-century considering that some of the principles are still present today and how new beliefs have been incorporated in todays idea of sexuality .For example; today sexuality is looked upon as a taboo topic in which, soietyhas made up their own standard in which our current and future generations are to withhold. Sexuality originated and a culture's sexual practice in which different, concepts have developed from those particular guidelines already in place, however now in days the past and present perception of sexuality clashes and there becomes a barrier between what and when is sexualization acceptable . Lastly, the background of the perception of sexuality freedom comes into play because of the huge clash between what people used to think and now where most choices regarding sexuality is acceptable.
Sexuality in today's society has perhaps made up their own defention of Amerian exuality. Dykeman,Duncan,Irvin and King(2005) suggest “Popular culture has belittled the moral significance of sexual relations among young Americans, and the idea that sex is merely a recreational activity has prevailed”Within this particular statement understanding how this particular concepts is directly affected by factors such as race, gender, biased opinions...etc.The factors listed alters society opinion in what is considered when talking about sexuality. For example the representations of minorities and the over sexualization of particular groups of people.
Expanding the concept of different factors affecting American perception of sexuality begins with what contributes to opinions being brought up.Race is one of the most abundant factors playing a role in the perception in sexuality.Hooks(2003) uses how black females specifically represented sexually throughout society as a whole.“Representations of Black female bodies in contemporary popular culture rarely subvert or critique images of black female sexuality…….which still shape perceptions today” creating a sense of how certain races are categorized in a such a sexual content.Gender identity is another substantial factor in perception of sexuality in today's society. In which certain groups in society do not form conventional relationships so,the perception of sexuality in their eyes ,may not be the same as in others creating another barrier made to perceive an outlook of sexualiaty as one specific thing.Overall
Dyekman(2005) explains “ There is no way to fight the course of cultural norms; but there is a way to prevent those cultural norms from becoming a detriment to our society”.Meaning that stereotypes will forever shape the culture of sexuality.
Sexuaity ,Self And Society. The organization of society and how we perceive “sexuality” is altered through the concept of people telling other people what to think. As a whole America has a problem with biased opinions and forcing other to believe what they believe ,creating a certain view on sexuality and factor involved with sexulity. To truly understands one sexualiy one must be able to identify and understand the truth about themselves.Conflicting issues such as one's sexual preference,For example, homosexuality was seen as something of conflict now it is seem as a right of freedom amongst the particular community.Another example,is how race affects self realization within sexualixation, most Black women are looked upon as “sex icons” and are perceived as being useful for just that.As Hooks(2003) suggest in the following statement “When Black women relate our bodies, our sexuality,in ways that place erotic recognition,
desire, pleasure , and fulfillment at the center or our effort to create radical black female subjectivity,we can make new and different representations of ourselves as sexual subjects”.
This particular quote initiates the idea of changing the view of sexuality within societies interpretation and stereotypes of sexuality ,that we must deprive ourselves of the traditional.Values in order to not be afraid of interrogating effects ,when exploring the sexuality of black women and in order to “challenge dominant representations”. Overall the perception of sexality must be questoined within oneself so,that sexuality in the twenty-first century can be changed.
The meaning of sexuality within today's society has various methods behind it reasoning. There is no longer a “normal” trend within society concerning sexuality such as how it was for example;in the nineteenth century.Varney(2014) suggest “The concept of sexual identity has become so fluid as to be meaningless. And this radical change has happened quickly. There is no denying that the landscape is wildly different and considerably blurrier than the one that existed back in the day”.Varney specifically labels sexuaity as such a “fluid as to be meaningless” almost as if sexuality is something that has no definite standpoint however, eac identity has its own concept into the formation of “sexuality” he also uses the example of a man becoming an women attending an all women's college. This examples allows the analyzation of how sexuaity can mean more than one thing,Varney also mentioned that today's society look the situation as bizarre however,in the past it would be something as a far thought. This ties into the concept of sexuality because, when considering it allows an insight into how gender affects sexuality.More into the the idea of sexuality “meaning” in today's society.Originally bought into place meaning the capacity of sexual feeling, with that being noted, the whole purpose of this particular section,is to acknowledge the connection between sexualiy and the meaning of sexuality ,identifying the reasoning behind the meanings of sexuality that exist today.Reasoning such as factors that play a role in which determine society's opinion on sexuality and how opinion sape the term “meaning” of a sensitive topic such as sexuality.
Conclusion. As mentioned the following methods played a particular in the perceptions, meaning and purpose of sexuaity in the twent-first century society that we reside in.The question that should be considered is rather society would be better with loose or strict sexuality? As mentioned before the are many consequences to the outcomes that affect sexuality.(Snyder 2012) says “ But attitudes toward sexuality have definitely changed in America over the decades. In the early part of the 20th century most Americans followed strict rules when it came to sexuality, but then along came the “sexual revolution” and all of that changed”.Snyder also states that the idea of “loose sexuality” has also came into play in which contributed to the questioning of rather loose or strict sexuality is “good” for society.Loose society meaning of one free choices within the sexuality boundaries that allow individuals to freely express themselves sexually.A strict society meaning one of strict limitations into rather what sexual choice can be made amongst one another.Further researching into the America and sexuality Snyder(2012) states “While much of the rest of the world would consider us to be a bit “prude”, the truth is that America is a global leader when it comes to loose sexuality” This surprising fact adds to the point of how society take the new change into the interesting topics such as sexuality it also allows a new definite purpose of sexuality ; meaning your sexuality is not defined by who you have sex with however, about the emotions and feelings toward other people.Bringing this research to the end sexuality in the twenty-first century (today's society) is a confusing topic which explore the many different aspects of sex and people and the overall contributing factors that influence opinions about sexuality.
