Before I start the quest of exemplifying my purpose of writing this statement, I would like to give a brief introduction of myself. I am Tasmia Tus Safa, and I completed my BSc degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from North South University in 2017. I am currently working as a Software QA Executive at Skitto, a digital product of Grameenphone of the Telenor group. Previously, I worked as an intern at Banglalink Digital for four months, in the Network Operations department. Please pardon me as I intend to give a small synopsis of my motivation towards becoming a better engineer. I looked for answers all around me, trying to decipher my inner calling at the mere age of 18. I then recalled those awestruck moments during physics lectures. I remember having been intrigued by the lectures on waves and lights and how magnets work. As a seventh grader, I was absolutely fascinated by how something as small as electrons could light up the world. Hoping to keep that spark of curiosity alive within me, I chose Electrical Engineering. My love for circuits, control systems, hardware, and software grew each year. The laboratories at my university were equipped to quench a student’s thirst for consistent absorption of knowledge.
The courses I took on electrical theories were not only helpful but also inspiring enough to have helped me make an unwavering decision to stay in this career field. For my senior year, I did a project on developing efficient use of magnetic energy to achieve a cost-effective way of levitation. The project was successful which utilized a unique and novel combination of efficient magnetic levitation and propeller based forward propulsion. Faculty members from my department appreciated our work and we also scored an A for our project. Also, for another course, my group mates and I wrote a paper on implementing a highly efficient power management system for charging phones using RF energy harvesting. The paper demonstrated an idea where a voltage doubler circuit set inside the device receives RF signals from nearby Bluetooth devices and consumes the signal’s power efficiently to charge itself. After graduation, I did my internship at Banglalink Digital, owned by Global Telecom Holding. I was given the partial responsibility as a Project Coordinator on a Site improvement project of BTS sites. Currently, I work as a Software QA Executive at Skitto, where I work with the developers to prepare test cases, report bugs and suggest improvements to the main app. These experiences helped me gain knowledge and insights on the practical world. It developed my analytical and research capabilities.
Furthermore, I was more driven towards this profession as I saw how empowering this career field is and how much of an impact I could make on the society, by channeling my knowledge in the right direction. I was also motivated by the lack of women in this field, especially in my country Bangladesh. I had no role model, no one to look up to when I started studying or even at my workplace. I want to make an impact and be someone whom little girls would admire and take inspirations from. Working through obstacles in this male-dominated field made me even more determined to succeed, and having an international degree from Canada with links to the industry will help me reach my career aspirations much faster. The option to choose Master of Applied Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering fascinated me, due to its extensive and interdisciplinary curriculum. The Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Electrical and Computer Engineering is one of the largest graduate programs in Electrical Engineering in Canada. My senior year project got me interested in the study of electromagnets, therefore, I would like to focus my research on electromagnets and software engineering, and try integrating these two topics together. Coupled with the extensive curriculum and links to industry, along with being located near federal government and industry research laboratories, the prospect of networking with cross-cultural peers is extensive. I believe this program will give me one of the best opportunities in Canada for both industrial and graduate research contact. I expect to apply my knowledge gained , as Bangladesh is increasingly working towards significant technological advancements. Therefore, I can assure you of my determination and perseverance to continue graduate studies at Carleton. I sincerely hope the admissions committee will consider my application and help me achieve my dreams of making a difference, to the society and my country. The best dreams come true, and I believe mine will too.
