Winston Churchill famously stated, "Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts."
These words have played somewhat of an important part in my life. When I pursue something I want, or is important to me, I know that my setbacks are essential lessons that eventually lead me to doing my best. Despite the setbacks I’ve faced, I’ve always tried to move forward and gain valuable lessons.
A couple years ago I had a hard time adjusting to social situations at a new school I was in. I was always a bit reserved and I would be passively picked on. As a result of this, one day, I ended up fighting against three guys from my school. I wasn’t able to defend myself and ended up getting beaten up. One of my classmates wanted to help, and encouraged me to join a boxing club. In turn, my life changed completely. I learned the skills to defend myself, I learned the importance to never fight outside of martial arts designated locations, and I learned important values concerning my spirituality. I was amazed by how much this boxing gym affected my life, and I think it can have the same effect on many others’ lives as well.
At the moment, I’m currently working for Golden Boy Promotions, the boxing promotional firm that got me to the gym where I am now, and I love it. However, to get beyond where I want to be, getting accepted into the University of California will bring me closer to my goal. If I get accepted, I can learn the professional skills required to help Golden Boy Promotions become more mainstream, while also getting to experience college life.
I want to join the University of California's Marshall School of Business and pursue a degree in business management. The institution has some of the best minds in the country and I can’t wait to get the opportunity to learn alongside, and from, some of the brightest. One of the institution's core values is centered around developing student leadership by providing a holistic environment suited for learning and other activities. As a result. I’m certain that the University of Southern California has an environment where I can further develop my leadership, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills — essentials in the world of management.
In the future, I hope to become the President of Golden Boy Promotions. If admitted into the University of California, I will be closer to achieving one of my life goals.
