One project that I am interested in completing is more along the lines of abstract photography, an aspect image capturing that I have not done much of, as I prefer to take images of nature and scenes that are easily discernable as such. However, I have always liked abstract art and I want to bring it into my realm of photography. To create the abstract photos, I had two different ideas in mind: one is to use oil and food coloring, and the other is to freeze objects such as flowers in ice and get a snapshot of them. In both instances, the use of color and light with play a large role in creating the image. For the oil idea, I would use oil of different thicknesses to create layers and put food coloring and water in to make bubbles of different color. Using Light to illuminate them from behind I think I could create a very interesting project. For the abstract image of objects in Ice I would freeze a delicate object such as A flower and freeze it suspended in ice. Using light shining through the ice and the subject along with the other interesting features of the ice, contrasting with the bright colors of the flower, could create a very artistic image. Project name, Abstract oils.
Another project I would like to peruse would be to photograph objects or subjects in nature that seem or appear very out of the ordinary. The subject could either be something that is completely irrelevant to the background, such as a vase with a single rose, located in very lonely locations such as in a forest or by the ocean on a beach. This project could also be taken in the direction such that Andy Goldsworthy took it. He would take a photograph of nature and the subject he created for the photograph appears to be out of the ordinary, yet it is made from elements from the scene itself. Fr example he uses sticks to create a perfect circle around a rock that you never would expect to be there, and he takes an interesting photo of it. I would like to create a project along these lines. Project name, Unnatural nature. This might be an interesting use for my film camera and would use black and white film.
For a third project, I would possibly like to dive into the manipulation of light, where I can create images of light trails, light orbs, or light spirals. I think that it would be very exciting and interesting to create images where there are trails of light or strange light orbs in a scene, looking almost alien in a very familiar location. This project would have to be undertaken at dusk or at night, and I would travel to familiar locations and set up an interesting landscape for the photo. Using a long exposure, I would then use light to make the ordinary scene into something completely different. I would walk through the scene with a light stick or hang the light from a point and swing it around and then be able to be surprised as to what the picture will become.
For the fourth project, I was interested in creating a deconstructed landscape. This would be an interesting way to explore the landscapes around Bristol. To do this I would take multiple images of specific points in a landscape, anything that really catches my eye or is very unique or beautiful. Once completes, the images could be stitched together into a grid with different layers, to create the image of the landscape. I would create deconstructed landscapes for downtown Bristol, a beach, or the woods. One theme that I am particularly interested in is urban decay, so through the deconstructed landscaped I could possibly highlight urban decay and add this theme into the project. These pictures would be taken with a narrow aperture to highlight specific points in the landscape.
