Our home is our heartland and it is a place where, in general, people feel at their most secure and happy. Creating a home environment can be difficult in that it can be a long road to acquire a rental property or a property to buy that ticks all the boxes. So when you do find it, you really want to safeguard it and make it a sanctuary for all its residents. When you read about statistics such as how one property crime occurs every 4 seconds in the USA, it’s hard not to be daunted and fearful. No one wants to experience a home invasion or burglary of any kind. It’s scary and more importantly it can be dangerous as injuries and fatalities can occur.
A home invasion that happens while people are in the house can have serious repercussions not only physically if you get injured but it can have lasting mental impacts too and of course monetary affects on top of all this upheaval. It’s important to review how and where you keep keys to access the property; don’t fall into the trap of being complacent and leaving a key under places like a flower or plan pot because savvy burglars will check these places. Furthermore, with so many access windows, gates and doors to modern properties, be sure to have some system whereby whomever is last to leave the home checks that all windows and doors are securely locked. The same should occur for the last person who retires to bed at night-time. Many convicted burglars will explain how they regularly gain access to people’s properties owing to unlocked patio doors, back doors, side gates and so on. If you move to a new area, get involved with the local community and see if there is a scheme existing which you can join that involves people keeping an “eye” on each other properties. If there is none set up, consider setting one up. It will have many positive benefits for all; firstly it will create a more secure community and secondly it will help you to get to know your neighbours and create a wonderful community spirit!
The people at Senator Windows have put together this infographic which outlines a number of tangible ways that an individual can protect their home. It splits the process into different segments so you can use it like a checklist to see if you’ve covered those bases in respect of your property. Don’t sit back and let your property appear vulnerable, read through this infographic to get some ideas and some won’t actually require monetary investment, just maybe a little effort!
