Sleep is a very important part of the human life. One that is ultimately required for the body to function properly. But it is quite unfortunate that the world is becoming busier by the day and people are spending less time sleeping. In fact, a lot of research done has revealed that about 30% of people are spending less time sleeping than what is expected. However, if you keep sleeping less than normal you put yourself at risk of so many dangers, ranging from health to your safety. So, it will be good to take out time to ponder on what effects. These are some of the things that happens when you don’t get enough sleep:

You Won’t Remember Things Easily

Sleep has a great effect on the memory. In fact, it is during sleep that the brain articulates the previously stored data in the brain with the latest. So, if you desire a retentive memory, you must get adequate sleep.

A lot of researches have been conducted by neuroscientists on the relationship between sleep and the brain. All of these revealed that sleep is crucial to the way and manner in which the brain merges the contents of our learning. This means that we must sleep well if we want to store new details well and also commit it to memory.

You May Lose Concentration and May Not Be Able to Think Straight

Sleep is directly related to brain functions such as reasoning, solving problems, making decisions, memorizing and so on. When you miss sleep for a night, you may not function properly in any of these activities the following day. You would also find it difficult to be focused on some activities.

Your Immunity Will Decrease

This is one of the great effects of not sleeping well. Your body cells that are responsible for fighting against diseases are weakened and this makes you prone to fall sick.

Sleep is directly related to our health. Scientists have shown that people who sleep regularly for about 7 to 8 hours keep a healthy heart and in fact their risk of certain types of cancer are reduced. But when you don’t get enough sleep on a regular basis you stand the chance of being infected with several infections or illnesses.

You May Have A Reduced Sex Drive

When you don’t sleep well, your sex drive reduces. When researchers conducted a survey on some men over a period of two weeks, they were tested afterwards and results showed that their testosterone levels have reduced. These men also revealed that they experienced a reduced interest in sexual activities, change of mood and also a lessened strength to perform.

Your Skin Health Is Affected

It is an obvious fact that inadequate sleep affects the appearance, your eyelids may become swollen and your eyes reddened. Adequate sleep on the other hand enhances your looks. So, when people are seen to have wrinkles, loose skin and a skin color that does not blend together too early in life it is majorly caused by lack of proper sleep gain.

Unhealthy Weight Addition

Inadequate sleep always makes people add weight unnecessarily. This is because when people stay awake at nights while they ought to sleep, the hormones that is responsible for the stimulation of hunger is secreted in higher doses. This then makes the individuals to eat more than the body requires. This implies that people who sleep for not more than 5 or 6 hours every night are likely to add weight and may eventually be obsessed.

Sleep Is Linked to Your Risk of Getting Diabetes

When people don’t get enough sleep, they are more likely to develop diabetes because the quantity of sleep goes a long way to affect the blood sugar level. Researchers reported that about 7 to 8 hours of sleep is the perfect range in order to prevent problems of insulin production and sensitivity that could cause diabetes. They have also revealed that the symptoms of diabetes can get better with improved amount of sleep.

Reduced Physical Performance

When you don’t get adequate sleep, you are more likely to perform poorly at physical exercises. This is mostly true for the older people. When we sleep well, our muscles are revived and we are better in performing our daily activities. But when the body has not rested enough over the night, the accumulation of stress will prevent the body from being active. This is also true for athletes; they perform better after enough sleep.

You Are More Likely to Be Involved in A Car Accident

It is dangerous to drive when you have not had enough sleep over the night. This is because your vision may be blurred as a result of sleeplessness. Inadequate sleep causes eye spasm and dryness. Driving requires utmost concentration and focus, but when you have not gotten enough sleep you will find it difficult to focus or concentrate and this may result into accidents that may claim lives.

You Are More Likely to Be Depressed and Have Poor Social Interaction

Sleep affect the production of certain hormones, some of which are those responsible for happy moods and our relationship with others. Research show that when people do not sleep well, they have high cases of negative moods which includes sadness, anger, intolerance, frustration and irritation. On the other hand, inability to sleep can also be a sign of a mood problem. For instance, when a person is depressed, he would find it difficult to sleep. This shows a very significant relationship between sleep and depression.
