Abortion is a medical procedure used to end a pregnancy and cause the death of a fetus. Many people think abortions should be illegal because they consider it a crime; these people are called pro-life. Some people think abortions should be illegal due to religious reasons. However, a woman has a right to choose what to do with her body. Women should not feel shamed or pressured into keeping a child just to satisfy the standards of others who are judgmental. Abortions shouldn’t be illegal because women should have the right to prevent having a child with birth defects (avoid transmitting STD’s), pregnancy resulting from rape and/or incest, and the inability to care for their child financially.

Most babies develop normally and are born healthy. However, sometimes the baby does not develop normally. Birth defects can heavily affect the parents because they are afraid of social interactions, bullying, and financial problems. If a baby has a disability, the parent cannot afford the medical bills. Most women during pregnancy are afraid of their children having a birth defect because of the baby’s social life growing up. Most women do not have hope and just get an abortion because they are afraid to take the risk. Some women are afraid of watching their baby grow up, and then die from their birth defect. Usually, when a baby is born, the mother instantly gets attached. It can affect the mother mentally and physically if the baby dies. Birth defects can affect almost any part of the body. Parents fear birth defects will result in their children getting bullied. Some parents also are not financially stable enough to raise a child with a birth defect.

Sexually transmitted diseases are one of the biggest reason’s women get abortions. Some women who have HIV or Herpes can possibly pass the disease onto the baby. Children should not have to go through that. Growing up with an STD can be depressing for a child. It is not fair for children to grow up with an STD that they will have for the rest of their lives. Some women think it is best to get an abortion instead of bringing a baby into this world having an STD. Honestly, it is a smart decision because children can grow up depressed and confused. They must take a lot of medication, which is not fun for a child.

Rape is one of the most common reasons for abortions. Abortions are needed for victims of rape. People get raped and impregnated and do not have a choice in being pregnant. Raising a child that was conceived from rape can negatively affect the mother’s life. An abortion may be the best option for them. Rape is defined as unlawful sexual intercourse without the person’s consent. Victims of rape suffer a lot of emotional and psychological stress. They also suffer from unexpected pregnancy as of a rape, which can be very destructive to their lives. The rape-related pregnancy rate is 5.0% per rape among victims of reproductive age, (12 to 45). Why should victims of rape deliver babies that were never planned and that are unwanted? Teenagers, especially, should not have to go through that traumatizing experience. It can haunt them for the rest of their lives. Also, among adult women, an estimated 32,101 pregnancies result from rape each year. There is a possibility that abortion may be the only option for victims, especially teenagers, since teenagers can’t take care of themselves. Also, they might regret the decision later, but it is the best option for them. Women can experience trauma and other effects concerning the abortion. Keeping a child that was born from rape can negatively affect the parent; it is a past that they cannot let go of. Most victims of rape often result with an STD.

Many women who chose abortion do not have the financial resources to support a child. Honestly, that is a logical reason to get an abortion. Women who cannot take care of their children financially, should not really bring them into this world. Many women are by themselves during pregnancies, so they fear taking care of their child by themselves. Some women also do not want to experience being a single parent. Out of all pregnancies among American women, 49% are unintended. Having children is an especially important decision. It requires deliberation, planning, and preparation. If a woman does not have enough money to provide their children with clothes, food, and shelter, then their child should not have to experience that. Some children who are born into this lifestyle usually become depressed, homeless, or end up in prison. Most grow up to do illegal things. It is not easy being born into the struggle. It is best to provide children with the best lifestyle they can have. Not being financially stable to provide for children is the worst. It can affect the child physically and mentally. It can also affect the parent. It is important to think of the child’s life after pregnancy. A parent should at least be considerate of the child’s life after they are born.

Abortions should not be illegal because women should be able to do what they want with their bodies. Victims of rape, women with STD’s, and women that are not financially stable should not bring a child into this world. Abortion sometimes can be the best option for a woman who is not ready to be a parent. Some women know they are not parent material and choose to get an abortion. Every child deserves to live a happy life. A baby should not come into the world unwanted. Banning abortion will not make it go away. Abortion is ethical and pro-life. Abortion should remain legal as a woman has the right to choose her life.
