Ever since the first years of civilization, women did not have the same rights as men. They were not allowed to vote or inherit property on the same terms as men. Women were even disqualified from certain proffesions and did not have the right to equal pay. Consequently, their educational and occupational opportunities were severely limited. It was commonly believed that a woman’s role was only the wellfair of her family: the upbringing of her children and submitting to her husband. To date, it is shameful to say, women have still not achieved equality.
Gender equality is an important ethical issue that requires the proper investigation in order to find solutions. Elizabeth Cady Stanton, author of “Women’s Bible” has said that: “We are, as a sex, infinitely superior to men, and if we were free and developed, healthy in body and mind, as we should be under natural conditions, our motherhood would be our glory. That function gives women such wisdom and power as no male can possess.” As a feminist, she truly believed in the female independence. Cady Stanton worshipped the female figure, explaining the world that a woman should have the opportunity to speak with no fear of judgment and to have their own purposes in life.
Moreover, the significance of the issue of gender equality is reflected in everyday situations. Even in the same family, boys tend to care less about dress, eating habits and other details. They are taught that they “will be the leaders of the future”. Girls, on the other hand, should be submissive and obedient. They are taught with emotionality and delicacy through examples of the past. In fact, the media also maintains gender stereotypes, which are associated with different gender role attitudes. These phrases prove the existence of stereotypes caused by gender inequality: “You fight like a girl…” or “Man up…”. Even the Disney movies or fairytales play a significant role in reinforcing stereotypes. For instance, in “Cinderella”, girls are made to believe that the only way to fulfill their dreams is with a man by their side.
It is true that we live in a society where gender equality is not fully achieved. A female must work twice as hard in order to be named half as good as a male’s work; but in order to achieve equality, we must think equally. As Susan B. Anthony said: 'Men, their rights, and nothing more; women, their rights, and nothing less
