Why I Am Applying to The Ms Program in Industrial Engineering

I am applying to the MS program in Industrial Engineering at the State University of New York at Buffalo. My decision comes only after careful evaluation of the type of work I enjoy and my aptitude to conduct research in the field of transportation and logistics. More specifically, I am very keen on the subjects like transportation analytics, linear programming, and their applications in the industry. Other areas that interest me are sustainable manufacturing, social network behavior analysis. In the future, I would like to either continue my research in a university or join any reputed R&D department in an organization to implement what I will learn here. Despite the oddness, my unwillingness to give up combined with hard works and tenacity always helped me to secure good grades in academics at every stage of my education.

With a GPA of 93/100 in physics and mathematics, I stood fourth out of 85 students in my high school sophomore year examination. Further, I secured an admit in Haldia Institute of Technology under Maulana Abul kalam Azad University of Technology in a highly competitive entrance examination among 70000 students. The excellent undergraduate program in Production Engineering not only provided me with traditional mechanical engineering concepts but also exposed me to various fields of Industrial Engineering. Among all the subjects, there were the course and lab work in Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, Production Planning and Control which fascinated me the most towards industrial engineering. I like the problem-solving aspects and the magnitude of this field.

To further supplement my knowledge in this domain my professor encouraged me to take senior year project on the role of supplier selections and evolutions in a traditional manufacturing organization. With my group member, ranking performance of three multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) approaches are compared and analyzed based on the requirements and the strategies preferred by the company and thereby presented the future scope of arriving at optimal solutions to the supplier selection problems. Finally, we found that all three methodologies are highly powerful in nature and for in-depth analysis, the sensitivity analysis of input data must be performed in decision-making methods which may not be sufficiently accurate. Although my curriculum has equipped me with a comprehensive knowledge of the theoretical aspects only, I took further steps in gaining practical experience to boost up my concepts. My summer training at Indian power transmission major, Premium Transmission Ltd., Kolkata has given me practical experience in resource optimization tools like JIT (Just-in-Time). Later I joined at Levram Life sciences Pvt. Ltd., Mumbai, India’s largest manufacturer of blood donation tube as Manufacturing Engineer. Here I redesigned the floor layout to accommodate new machinery which achieves improvement in productivity by ten percent.

My seventh-semester coursework in production planning and control help me to implement this project. Furthermore, my participation in a weeklong automobile event organized by IIT, Kharagpur has helped me to grow both personally and professionally. But then I realized that graduate study is crucial to get deeper insight and understanding in my proposed research area.

After my rigorous research, I found that with an eminent faculty team coupled with a diverse range of courses, the University of Buffalo will provide me with a perfect environment to study Industrial Engineering. From the information brochure, web pages, I have gathered that a number of renowned faculty members are working on the distribution logistics frontier of this field. It will be my privilege to work under such eminent researchers and contribute something useful to our society. I strongly believe that with a relevant academic background and aptitude I would be not only able to meet the requirements of this renowned program but also will be able to catch the standard of current students in the department. Moreover, I am extremely thankful towards the admission committee for allowing me to express myself and look forward to having the opportunity to study at this renowned university
