Why I Chose Clinical Psychology

After careful consideration, I decided to apply to the PsyD Clinical Psychology program at Alliant International University. My primary goal is to gain the professional experience and training necessary to begin my career as a clinical psychologist. The decision to pursue this program was influenced by several factors, including the program's practitioner-scholar model and its emphasis on diversity and community engagement.

The Practitioner-Scholar Model

One of the main aspects that captured my attention about Alliant’s program is its focus on the practitioner-scholar model. This approach integrates academic theory with practical application, allowing students to begin clinical work early in their studies. For me, the most effective learning environment is one where theories and research are directly applied to clinical practice. By working with clients experiencing mental health challenges from the start of the program, I aim to develop the problem-solving skills necessary to address complex psychological issues effectively.

Commitment to Diversity and Community

Another significant factor in my decision was the university’s dedication to diversity and inclusion. Alliant’s culturally diverse student body provides a unique opportunity to engage with peers from varied backgrounds, fostering a learning environment where different perspectives are valued. Exposure to this diversity will help me expand my understanding of different cultures and enhance my ability to work with clients from various backgrounds. In practice, clinicians often serve individuals with diverse cultural and socioeconomic experiences, making this aspect of the program invaluable for my growth as a future psychologist.

Research Interests: Criminal Behavior and Mental Health

During my undergraduate studies, I developed a particular interest in understanding the relationship between criminal behavior and mental health. Many incarcerated individuals report experiencing mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, or personality disorders. Correctional facilities have significantly higher rates of mental health disorders compared to the general population.

Through my studies, I aim to address the critical question: How can understanding criminal behavior and mental health lead to reduced incarceration rates and improved rehabilitation efforts for individuals with mental disorders? I am particularly interested in exploring evidence-based treatment approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), to develop effective intervention plans tailored to individual needs.

Application of Treatment Models

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) offers a promising framework for addressing the needs of incarcerated individuals with mental health disorders. CBT focuses on changing maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors, helping individuals develop healthier coping mechanisms. Another approach I plan to explore is behaviorism, which examines how life experiences shape actions and behaviors. By using principles of conditioning, behavioral therapy can replace harmful behaviors with constructive ones, ultimately supporting rehabilitation and reducing recidivism.

Personal Motivation and Future Goals

My passion for this field stems from a deep curiosity about the intersection of mental health and social justice. I am committed to finding ways to prevent individuals with mental disorders from becoming entangled in the criminal justice system. This includes advocating for better mental health training for law enforcement and exploring alternative approaches to incarceration that prioritize treatment over punishment.

Research Experience

Recently, I conducted a study examining the relationship between antisocial personality disorder and incarceration rates. The findings revealed that individuals with this disorder are significantly more likely to face incarceration. However, the integrated model of crime suggests that criminal behavior is influenced by a combination of early life indicators, developmental processes, and environmental factors. These insights underscore the importance of developing comprehensive, individualized treatment plans that address both the psychological and social dimensions of criminal behavior.
