Pit Bulls. They are enormous, vicious dogs made of pure evil. But are they really? Why is it that pit bulls get so much negativity in comparison to other canine breeds? In today’s society pitbulls are known for gruesome fighting, hurting people and other dogs, and various of other vicious acts. However, people do not know the truth about pit bulls. People discriminate against these dogs due to the negativity that has been set forth and has been labeled as their original personalities.
So, what is the truth about pit bulls you ask? Well according to the ASPCA, the pit bull breeds are developed to perform a specifically set task. These tasks can range from herding livestock to hunting, in all actuality they can be trained to do anything that their owner sets them to do. So, when it comes to fighting dogs, pit bulls are not natural born fighting dogs. They are specifically trained to fight and they cannot help but fight to win because when it comes to fighting, it is a win or die situation.
Pit bulls originate from England and were bred from the bulldog. From the start these dogs were bred to perform violent acts such as baiting (which is when bulldogs were put up against bulls, bears and other large animals). When baiting was banned in the 1800s, people then began to put the dogs up against each other. Thus began the sport of dog fighting.
There is a large variation of modern pit bulls, however, it is said that most are short-coated, have a wide skull, powerful jaws and a muscular, stocky body. Their weight usually ranges 35 to 65 pounds with a few who weigh as little as 25 pounds and others as much as 80 pounds or even higher.
Are pit bulls actually dangerous to people? Absolutely not. Although they are bred to be fighting dogs, pit bulls are trustworthy and friendly to people. In addition pit bulls also are able to be around other dogs. Despite their bad fighting rep, they have to ability to interact nicely with other animals. However, due to their fighting rep they are easily encouraged to fight with other dogs.
Overall, pit bulls are great dogs. Just like any other dog, pit bulls are not all bad and not all good. They deserve to be treated with care and respect. They do require an abundance of exercise, training and RESPONSIBLE management. Befriending a pit bull comes with its benefits such as their spirit, spark for life and sympathy for people. I myself am a co-owner of a pit bull, and I can say that he is the most loving, caring and friendly dog I have ever met. He loves people, toddlers and even cats. He is always filled with life and energy. He also understands what play time means. I will admit that he has gotten rowdy with other dogs and/or people that handled him in a bad manner. But you can expect that from any dog. Needless to say if you want to know the truth about pit bulls, its best to get to know one for yourself. So as the saying goes, “don’t judge a book by its cover.”
