World War One (WW1) happened from the years 1914 to 1918 and shaped what we know as the modern world. It had ever lasting impacts which can still be seen on daily basis but it mostly affected social and political spheres. It was between Germany, Austria-Hungary and Bulgaria along with the Ottoman Empire against Britain, France, Russia and Italy.
WW1 affected the society in a few ways. The first way being how the women were educated. After the men had left, the only citizens left behind were women and children. These women were taught how to do all the jobs the men has been doing, all these years, overnight. The women had to take over the jobs the men were doing, and they had to do it better and faster. The men had left obedient, illiterate women who considered themselves inferior than men but now the women had learned that they were in fact equal to men. Hence, now the women spoke up for their rights and there was space made for women in society. Now women would take parts in intellectual discussions with men.
Examples of these women could be Mary Curie who trained 150 women i radiology, anatomy, car repair and photo processing. She designed a portable X-ray machine she could take to battlefield. Now it was possible to detect shells, bullets and small pieces of metal in soldiers before it created an infection and was hard to cure. Mabel Stobart was another woman who actively took part in the WW1. She trained women to fulfill basic military skills and was also successful in taking her group of women in the Balkan wars against Turkey. Aiteen Cole Stewart also helped and was an African woman.
There were other groups as well, who now had place in society and this included the African-American and those with chocolate brown skin (Blacks). Earlier, the society was racist towards this group and considered themselves superior than them but now, at time of war, they were forced to let these citizens help them and they slowly started accepting them and the fact that they are all equal. Aiteen Cole Stewart helped in the war and was an African woman. There was also space created for the colonized people of Australia, Africa and the subcontinent (present day India, Pakistan and Bangladesh). They took people from these colonies to go fight the war which helped the people break away from the idea that they are inferior to those who colonized them. Now they fought on the same field as these people and when they saw their colonizers die, it made them realize that they aren't gods or as perfect as they pretend to be. Another thing to be noted is that after the WW1, Europe let go of some of its colonies because they had to make their own economy stable.
There were also changes in the political systems. There was change of country borders which were edited or moved. New countries (e.g. Poland) were made after Turkey was split up under the treaty of Severs. Under the treaty of Versailles, Germany was forced to loser 10th of its land. More treaties were signed with Bulgaria, Austria and Hungary who also ended up losing land and wealth. The Ottoman Turkish Empire came to an end. WWI also contributed to the Russian revolution as a new political system active was communism. The monarchy was replaced in Russia. The Soviet Union was also formed. Alsace-Lorraine was returned to the French. Because of this many of the monarchies in Europe were demolished or completely changed or replaced. They were replaced by democracy which gave the common people a right to say how their country was governed but it should be kept in mind that only 'ladies' and 'gentlemen' (men and women owning land) could vote at the time being, however later on full franchise was given.
After the WW1 free-trade also began. Earlier on, a country would only export and not import. But now, countries were in dire need of resources from others, mainly because of their shattered economy, hence they started importing. So imports and exports were balanced and a country no longer had to maintain a certain standard of every item and could now focus on bettering one specific item which they could also export to others. Trading increased and also helped countries relationships with one another which increased alliances signed.
Furthermore, the World War One also raised USA's status and made it the world superpower. During the war, Britain and other parts in Europe had changed all every-day-making-item factory in weapon making factories and other items which helped or contributed towards the war in any way. Hence, Europe was running out of the most basic necessities such as food, cloth, soap etc. Because all of Europe was running out of money and supplies, they had to import from countries outside Europe and the nearest one was USA. Hence, USA started exporting multiple items to Europe at high rates, so that Europe could maintain its population and take care of them. USA kept getting more money and their status kept increasing. They were making large amounts of profit and were becoming quite important. On the other hand, countries like Britain, Germany, France and Russia were getting more and more bankrupt due to giving too much cash to USA and because of funding the war. USA benefitted from the war, largely. Multiple countries in Europe, if not all of them, were in huge amounts of debts to USA and other countries which made their economy fall even lower. The war also affected economics and other spheres.
In this essay we have analyzed the ways how the World War One affected society and politics of the whole world and shaped it to be what we know of it as today.
