In chapter 6, due to the extreme heat, Nick, Jordan, Gatsby, Daisy, and Tom decide to take a suite at the Plaza Hotel. In the presence of Tom, Daisy, Nick and Jordan in a hotel room, Gatsby wants Daisy to leave her husband and confess that she has never loved him. There we see Tom start the row between Gatsby and Daisy and Tom ultimately wins the argument. Daisy is unable to say she never loved Tom, which hurts Gatsby greatly, and they set out to return to their respective homes. Tom allows Gatsby to drive Daisy home which is a sign of his triumph over Gatsby since it shows that Gatsby is unable to hurt Tom anymore. This incident shakes Gatsby and feels that all of his dreams with Daisy have been destroyed.
Gatsby expected Daisy to completely erase the previous four years she had spent with Tom Buchannan and start where she and Gatsby left off. In this case it is revealed that time cannot be recycled, recovered nor erased. Gatsby’s dream is to re-do the past and he expects Daisy to do the same, which we find is impossible. He is dissatisfied with his current situation and wants to go back in time to where he was happy, but he is unable to recreate his previous relationship with Daisy.
