Being wealthy can be great, but sometimes owning large sums of money can influence you negatively in a way that not only harms you but also the people around you. This can also be seen in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, The Great Gatsby. In his novel, Fitzgerald presents, through the characters Tom Buchanan, Daisy Buchanan, and Myrtle Wilson living in New York during the summer of 1922, that wealth can make people corrupt.
Daisy Buchanan is a great example of how her wealth has affected her in becoming corrupt. As she is married to the rich man Tom Buchanan, they have a fabulous life, one with all the riches and connections others could want. In Chapter 7, Gatsby says, 'Her voice is full of money... That was it. I'd never understood before. It was full of money - that was the inexhaustible charm that rose and fell in it, the jingle of it, the cymbal's song of it...'. This quote indicates that Daisy Buchanan is obsessed with material wealth, giving more information about her character. Of course, she married Tom Buchanan an aristocratic man who could provide anything she needed or wanted. Even with all of this, we get the feeling that she is bored and miserable. In the end, she advances in an affair with Gatsby. “She only married you because I was poor and she was tired of waiting for me. It was a terrible mistake, but in her heart, she never loved any one except for me.” This quote tells us that, even though she was in love with Gatsby, she is very dependent on money and only refers to rich men. Eventually, she falls even more in love with Gatsby when she saw that he later became wealthy and willing to get whatever she was looking for. Money is all that she desires, however, Gatsby does not even recognize that because he loves her too much. She lets Gatsby take the blame when she killed Myrtle and doesn’t feel guilt or interest in the death of Gatsby. With this, we see that Daisy is extremely selfish, her corruption is motivated by greed and her interests and neglects anyone for her comfort. If people endure agony to ensure her constant comfort, they will.
