In The Yellow Wallpaper, the author has not built the story with a long ending to offer answers to the activities of the husband or the mission of the narrator. The story ends with John finding out that his wife has reaped off the yellow wallpaper in her room and the reasons for the action cannot be accepted by him. First of all, the end of the story suggests progress in how the narrator stood up for herself against the men in her life. In the “Yellow Wallpaper” when the narrator is tearing down the wallpaper she said,“ ’I’ve got out at last,’ said I, ‘in spite of you and Jane, and I’ve pulled off most of the paper, so you can’t put me back.’ ” This shows that she is tearing down the wallpaper in the room that her husband put her in to recover. The wallpaper symbolized confinement that she was put in by the men in her life. Which by her tearing it down symbolized progress by her striving to be treated equally. So when she is ripping off the wallpaper she is standing up against the men in her life. Therefore showing indirectly that she could make decisions for herself and take care of herself.
Second of all, the end of the story suggests progress in how she overcame the obstacles of being a woman. At the end, when her husband faints, the narrator states, “So that I had to creep over him every time.” Which is showing that she kept going over and over him like he was in her way no more. This shows that she doesn’t let men hold her back. Because her “creeping over him” it symbolizes her getting past him and progressing. Therefore she is getting past the obstacle which is her husband. This showed progress in women equality by showing her not stop for men in her life.
To sum up, the ending of the story shows how the narrator doesn’t let men hold her back. Furthermore, she climbs and overcomes the obstacles the specialists caused her and then helped herself. Therefore she goes on her own to provide and help herself and shows she doesn’t need a man, showing and proving the progress that she has made.
