Introduction

As long as I can remember, music has been one of the greatest influences in how I navigate through the world. My mother has always loved music with all her heart, and I am very grateful that she was able to pass that same love on to me! In my younger years of childhood, I remember listening to the so-called classics: The Kinks, John Lennon, The Rolling Stones, and, of course, Queen. These were only some of the many artists my mother listened to. As I grew older, I realized that I too wanted to create music that would one day change the world. These songs expressed stories that were much different than other stories that were simply written to be read. These stories took me on many adventures that led to the growth of my imagination and ultimately the person I am today.

A Reflection of Nora Welty’s Narrative

“I want to be a rock star,” I would proclaim to my mother again and again. I would arrange my “rock star” outfits as I paraded around the kitchen singing along to my favorite songs. I don’t remember a time in my life when music was unavailable. Music was a very predominant part of my childhood, and that very clearly translates into some of my clearest memories. A quite common activity (that was to be done before bedtime) was disco parties. We would play songs such as “Staying Alive,” “I Will Survive,” and other disco classics as we roller-skated around the house. Occasionally, when we were lucky, these disco parties would also include glow sticks, but that was only on special occasions or when my mother felt up to dancing. Although these parties were fun and sometimes a little crazy, my favorite memories were summer mornings. Sitting in the dining room making crafts with my little brother as my mother washed dishes, Tracy Chapman sang in the background (Chapman, 1988).

The Influence of Fashion and Individuality

Growing up in the small conservative town of Farmington, my mother always made it her duty to remind my brother and me to stand out from the crowd. Growing up in the new age of technology, I was not only listening to the words of my most beloved artists, but I was also able to watch as they made both subtle and bold statement choices with their clothes. I, too, began to piece together outfits I thought only suitable for someone like myself; a lover of music, a patron of the arts. One of my favorite outfits was my “stage outfit,” as my mother used to call it. My old princess dress seemed too dull for a rock star, so of course, I made a few minor modifications. I tore the bottom of my tutu and cut out the sides of the top. There was no need to add more sparkle because it had enough as it was. Although this was my favorite outfit, it was definitely not my only outfit. Other outfits included ski goggles, colorful coats, and, of course, more tutus.

Music and Education

As years went on, I eventually found myself in elementary school. I had never been motivated to work hard in any of my classes; they were far too boring. This all changed when, in second grade, I found that some of my peers were able to join a special music group for “gifted” children. I began to work harder because the reward was finally worthwhile. Eventually, I, too, was able to join this group. I looked forward to Wednesday afternoons when I would be excused from the daily class activities to play percussion instruments and sing songs. This motivation didn’t stop in elementary school; it followed me through the school years to come. I first joined choir in sixth grade, and to this day, I still participate through my high school. Music has motivated me to keep my grades in a place that will not prohibit me from taking part in the things I love. By keeping my grades up, I am able to go on trips that not only allow me to take part in music, but also allow me to share my music with the world!

The Impact of Music on My Life

Music has had a profound impact on the choices I make in my everyday life. It allows me to participate in things that otherwise might not be of interest to me, such as schoolwork. I enjoy the confidence it has instilled in me to continue to be bold and stand for what I believe in. I feel that music has created a way for me to not only grow as an individual but also to work with fellow artists and admire the work that has been done before me. History is one of the key elements in music. Listening to not only modern-day music but also historical pieces has provided a special insight into what is to come, and how music might someday influence other generations just as it has influenced me.

Conclusion

In conclusion, music has been a guiding force in my life, shaping my identity, values, and aspirations. It has taught me to be resilient, creative, and open-minded. As I continue my journey, I am excited to see how music will continue to inspire and transform me and the world around me.
