There are many things Wal-Mart has done to become successful. At first, this start-up company was just like any other store. But the owner was well-versed in the industry, he found out how to buy things low and sell them at prices that were cheaper than other competitors. He embraced the technique of international market, which expanded the name and made it well-known. Even when people brought forth negative representations and remarks about the store, it did not back down. The store continued despite negative views which helps explain how the success came to be.
Wal-Mark faced many problems throughout its career, and still does, even in modern times. Many people were blaming this company for the closing down of many ma and pa type shops. Not to mention that the company had several problems with their employees. Many were not given enough hours to be able receive benefits such as health insurance, and made workers work overtime without payments or compensation. I feel that the company would not receive such ridicule if it would have been a smaller store. The focus came from being broadcasted in the media heavily. Its success was good, but also brought to light many of the issues.
I certainly believe that Wal-Mart changed after the death of Sam Walton. The main change would certainly be the degree of care for both customers and employees. Walton was a very moral man and he took care of those who worked for him, as well as the people he served. He would personally visit stores and listen to the concerns of the people. He was not influenced by Corporate greed and actually donated to many foundations. Money was not his motivation. However, he uses to work for JC Penny, which is how he learned many skills he utilized in his new business. He was tired of the pay and such at this store, and figured he could do a lot better with his own company. So even though he wanted a better life, money wasn’t as important as the experience and helpful acts he was able to contribute. After his death, the company became greedy, less giving, and treated employees and customers not as accommodating as before.
If I were to be made the CEO of Wal-Mart corporation, the first change I would do would be towards the treatment of employees. I feel that since Wal-Mart earns billions annually, they can certainly afford to pay for medical, dental, and vision for its workers. I would also work towards having loyalty programs, and donate unused or expired foods to charities in need instead of just throwing them away. I feel that both changes would certainly help towards a more ethical supermarket.
I would fix public relations by broadcasting a video first explaining the issue and apologizing for the actions of the past. I would ask people what they would like to see changed and how we can fix it. There are many things it needs to be different. Which would include caring about the people it serves. The company should try to be sustainable as well to the earth.
